It was a wonderful day of worship last Sunday April 8 commemorating the foundation of Arya Samaj in Jamaica, Queens. This has been an annual event for the last several decades in Queens and around the Northeast. As it does on this occasion over the last couple decades, the Maharishi Dayananda Gurukula, led by Guruji Dr. Satish Prakash, took its services and spiritual message beyond the walls of the mandir on 150th Street attracting a huge congregation on a very cold morning.
The Gurukula observed the 143rd Arya Samaj Foundation Day. Rituals were held outside of the Maharishi Dayananda Gurukula on the public street parallel to the mandir. The street was blocked to regular traffic to facilitate the religious service. Dr. Satish thanked the devotees for showing up in their numbers. He also thanked the police department for facilitating the outdoor event. He also expressed his gratitude to those who worked tirelessly to make the event a great success.
There were groups of people around a havan kund each sitting flat on mats and blankets on the ground as they performed fire ritual to cleanse the atmosphere and their soul. The program gave each family an opportunity to conduct their own havan ceremony and to participate in outdoor congregational worship. Though almost freezing cold, devotees were not daunted in their activities as they paid reverence to the almighty. They were fully immersed in the religious proceedings conducting rituals, chanting from the holy pages, and singing. The friendliness, and warmth of the occasion warmed up peoples’ souls. The occasion generated a feeling of togetherness. Dr. Satish delivered a magnificent updesh moving the emotions of the crowd. His examples of the life of Swami Dayanand moved the crowd.
Special dedication was made to those celebrating birthdays and wedding anniversaries as well as to those who lost loved ones, and to all families.
There were several guest speakers all of whom congratulated the organization for its work to uplift society. The speakers included Mohan Singh, Vrindra Jagan, (grand daughter of Cheddi Jagan), Pandit Goolsaran, and Dr. Tara Singh.
Devotees were extremely happy with the program and the grand havan service. Many of them participated for the first time. They indicated they did not know how beautiful the program was expressing regret that they have been missing a great program over the last several years. They said they will return next year and will come more prepared for the havan services.
Dr. Satish Prakash and the Gurukula were commended for this service and their excellent work in reaching out with its activities to the wider society. The gurukula has been organizing terrific programs to elevate spirituality in the community. Just the day before it launched a lecture study on the Rigveda.
Dr. Satish and the executive were thanked and applauded for keeping the gurukula shining.
