Dr Vishnu Bisram, columnist for ICDN and Director of the Center of Indian Diaspora Studies, interacted with the Chair of Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR) in Delhi last month. Dr Brij Bihari Kumar, an eminent scholar, is Chairman of the prestigious body. The Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) is a government body that plans, organizes and also funds seminars and or conferences on India related research. It also sponsors and funds studies on India and or the Indian diaspora. It promotes research in the field of social sciences. It was established in 1969 as an autonomous body under Government of India with their office in New Delhi.
Dr Bisram was in India to conduct research pertaining to indenturedship or girmitya laborers. He discussed various issues pertaining to the descendants of girmityas or indentured laborers in the diaspora. The ICSSR plans to host a conference on girmityas sometime soon.
