Deo Gosine Foundation (Trinidad and Tobago) in Collaboration with Centre for Freedom Struggle and Diaspora Studies, Indira Gandhi National University, New Delhi, Indian Diaspora Council of Australia, and Indian Diaspora International Center (IDIC) of the Caribbean announces a two-day International Conference on “People of Indian Ancestry and Indian Culture : Historic And Contemporary Contexts”. The conference is being held close to the Pravasi Bharatya Divas (PBD) in Varanasi on 19th and 20th January 2019. The PBD, India’s signature event for overseas based Indians, is held this year on January 21 to 23 in Tent City, Varanasi. This is the 15th annual edition of the PBD. The diaspora conference, sponsored by Deo Gosine Foundation (GSF), is being held at the prestigious Benaras Hindu University (BHU). Several speakers, including Mr. Gosine, from Trinidad and Caribbean are attending, with some presenting papers.
The Conference aims to highlight the contributions made by Indian Diaspora in the development of their home countries as well as the retention of culture since the advent of indentureship in the 1800s.  The conference also takes into account the oppressive conditions faced by overseas settled Indians and their relationships with India freedom struggle and the independence of their own territories. Besides, it intends to discuss the contemporary conditions and issues faced by the Indian community in their countries of domicile.
The conference will place before the world and deliberate upon the real girmitya (indentureship) history encouraging it to be a part of History curriculum (of schools and universities) in India and abroad. Promoting research on diaspora issues is a sub-theme of the Conference will be deliberating upon. The Conference will be addressed by eminent scholars, diplomats, journalists, citizens from various countries as key speakers.
The organizers wish to thank Mr. Deo Gosine for his co-sponsorship and support for the program. For further information,
