A Trinidad Hindu Perspective on Leadership

Dool Hanomansingh

Hindu leadership in Trinidad is a simple formula-blind loyalty to a single leader or Ji. There is no middle leaders. It is tribal and archaic.

This leadership style has alienated people with ideas and talents. Such people are viewed as a threat by the leader and they soon realize that they have no place in this tribal gathering.

Decisions are usually vetoed by the chief. If a decision is taken at an executive meeting, the chief has the powers to reverse it with none questioning his action.

As for the follower, he is one who cannot stand on his feet. With limited knowledge and skills he can bask in the glory of his master like the servants who boasts about the exploits and accomplishments of his master.

Members with initiatives are not entertained. No ideas, however brilliant, are entertained. The unwritten law is that only Ji must think.

As for celebrations Ji’s birthday and anniversary are celebrated. The loyal followers do not have birthdays; they have dropped from breadfruit trees!

Such organizations are failing because they don’t have individuals with abilities to execute meaningful projects. Why Hindus are not attending the mandir is not an issue as the loyalty of a handful of followers is satisfactory. This mentality has now reduced those organizations to cults.

Sickness and death of members of the cult matters while those who have ceased being loyal are ignored. Class consciousness also steps in as the poor has no place in such organization.

Despite these setbacks, there are few Hindu leaders who continue to excel especially in the field of education. Their schools and colleges are second to none and have been so for several years.

Many Hindus excel as professionals and several Hindu families run successful businesses.

Hindus are an elusive bunch not falling blindly for the Rawan-Kans leadership style. They are generally loyal to dharma and even their father and brother cannot win their loyalty as in the cases of Prahalad and Vibhishan respectively. Such one-man leadership style has no place in Hindu Society. Such cult leaders would strive and flourish only for a while before time decimates them.
