Hereunder is a Guardian Newspaper clipping of the inaugural award ceremony held on February 18th, 2024 at the St. Stephen’s College in Princes Town.

The above picturesque introduction to the Naipaul Award inaugural ceremony is intended to be a literary GPS that navigates you along the journey this undertaking is about to embark upon.
Indo/Trinis have long complained that the State, which is responsible for bestowing upon its citizens, national awards have so marginalized them that they feel ignored even though in many fields of endeavour – in business, scholarships, academics etc. – they feel they excel way beyond other ethnic groups in the society – who go on to be awarded in those particular fields of endeavour.

The Naipaul Awards was founded on the premise that awards should not be left in the hands of a particular group of people who might be influenced by their personal agendas and like Alfred Nobel, who created the Nobel Prize which has become the template, the benchmark for recognition, the Naipaul Award might just become ours in due time.

Since this is a fledgling endeavour being done on a shoestring budget, your kind understanding and support is sought here as funding is required for medals, venue, decoration and catering for honorees and guests attending the function when medals are given out but that is for the short term but for the long term a permanent long term fund is intended whereby recipients could receive a monetary reward as is done by other organisations : the Nobel Prize, MacArthur, and Guggenheim etc.

It is hoped that you identify with the altruism of this undertaking and find making a contribution to it something noble.

I thank you.

Sincerely,
L. Siddhartha Orie
