he American media has called the US election for the Presidential and Vice Presidential ticket of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. This writer has called the race for Biden and Harris since Wednesday. It appears that Biden has won the battleground states of Pennsylvania, Georgia, Nevada, and Arizona. He is also just trailing in North Carolina. Definitively, it is a Biden/Harris victory.
The certification of the ballots would take a few days as there would be automatic recounts in some states because of the narrowness of the victory.
Although the Democratic challenger, Joe Biden, was trailing in Georgia and Pennsylvania through most of Thursday, he made up for the deficit in mail in postal votes in Democratic oriented counties that were not included in early counts. Unlike in previous elections, this was the first election in which mass based postal voting was approved because of the issues pertaining to Covid 19. There were mi8llions of mail in ballots – that were required to be post marked by November to be valid. More voters than normal cast votes in this election as a result of postal voting and they favored Biden.
Republicans tend to vote in person while Democrats used early voting and mail in ballots. The early counting of ballots was for in person voting, then early voting through November 3. Mail in votes were counted subsequently. Thus, the republican Donald Trump took an early lead in the critical battleground states. But the gap between Trump and Biden was not that huge. As the counting of mail in ballots was processed, Biden narrowed the gap through Thursday and overtook Trump on Friday morning with almost all the ballots counted in Georgia and Pennsylvania. North Carolina, Nevada, and Arizona are still to complete their counts. Biden could win all three states and add to his tally of electoral votes although he is trailing in NC. He does not need any of them to win the Presidency. Biden has 289 votes, assuming GA and PA remains unchanged; he only needs 270 to win the presidency.
There is really no path to victory for Trump even if he were to get all of the military ballots. If the military votes overwhelmingly for Trump and if the numbers are large enough to erase the deficit with Biden, then Trump could triumph. And that is very remote as Biden will also win substantial number of military ballots. Biden is the President Presumed and Kamala Harris the Vice President Presumed. They would become officially elected in December when the electoral college meets to cast their votes. In January the electoral votes will be counted and the declaration made by the Vice President to the Senate when they would become President and Vice President Elect.Swearing in takes place around January 21..
