COP Will Not Contest Elections in Trinidad

Trinidad

Press Release, June 25, 2023

The Congress of the People (COP) issues a release saying it will not contest the August 14 2023 local elections.

While we continue to seek real and lasting betterment for our country; the Congress of the People wishes to advise that in-spite of having several prospective candidates and attempts at forging a true united effort, we will not be contesting the upcoming Local Government Elections.

We believe that more work needs to be done to ensure that true unity exist within a workable framework. We continue to be of the firm conviction that unity should not be solely on the basis of gaining power, but for the common interest of the people, and making Trinidad and Tobago a better place for all.

In several quarters we have now heard ad nauseum the saying, “To do the same thing and expect a different result, is madness”, yet repackaged attempts with no meaningful systems, will in our view result in the same outcomes as before.

Of a certainty, we believe that even as we are a rainbow country; a multiplicity of races living together, the same is possible within the political realm, and, while we have had limited success in achieving this, it is not beyond our reach.

We must move away from what we have termed ‘The I Man Syndrome ‘ or ‘I-manism’, but collaboration with respect, must become our major objective.

We do however wish all candidates the best of luck and remind all voters that we should seek to choose proper representation over party affiliations.

We remain focused in finding the right mechanism to ensure that we live the words we hold so dear to us, “Together we Aspire Together we Achieve”.

Political Leader
