Raffique Shah wins the cake! An insurrectionist who defends PNM’s policies that are not only anti-people but more so puts the country on the lap of the 1%.
Shaw was critical of the Opposition Leader who said that the heat of the sun would destroy the COVID 19 but was silent on the Minister of Health’s suggesting to citizens “to cut any old jersey and wrap a piece around your face.” This once upon a time socialist and insurrectionist, now writing for the Express, has suddenly become a dedicated defender of the PNM, a party that serves the interest of the bourgeoisie class or one percenters.
Luckily, Trinis must be reminded that Raffique Shah’s aspiration to be Opposition Leader was scuttled by Dr. Eric Williams who watched him square in eyes and said: “I am not going to have a mutineer for my Opposition Leader.” Whatever back door deals that took place then to keep Panday as Opposition Leader was to give the country an image of democracy and modernity. Dr. Williams did not want the country to undergo the trauma it underwent in 1970 when Raffique Shah led a section of the military to the street to join in a revolt against law and order.
I feel sorry for PNM supporters and sympathizers. They are like passengers in a bus driven by a mad man on a winding and narrow road on a mountainous region. If the bus has not fallen down a precipice, it is definitely not far from happening.
PNM in power is a haven for the 1% percenters to have a field day. When John Raheal was in Cabinet he not only shut down Caroni Ltd but also benefitted from lands that were converted into prime commercial properties. But Raffique Shah lacks the courage to speak out against this unjust distribution of the national patrimony.
Bogus polls are published to show the PNM on the lead. Charges of corruption are levelled against UNC candidates while the corruption of the PNM administration are left in the dark. The allocation of public spending to benefit the families of Stuart Young and Al Rawi is ignored by Raffique Shah. It is alright that Angus Young, a brother of Stuart Young, can get contract to supply loans to the government to the tune of billions of dollars with an asset base of a mere $300,000,000.
People’s expectations are rising. Daily they are exposed to the progress and strides that are taking place globally. The youths of the ghettoes understand that sauce and pig tail soup are not the only meals in the menu list. The people are now clamoring for better and they are not prepared to continue to allow politicians like Dr. Keith Rowley to exploit their fears and insecurities.
The PNM’s legacy is the preservation of the legacy of slavery. It simply continued after the British administrators left for London. These black sahibs embraced the teachings of the British slavishly, continuing where massa had left off.
The PNM was never the popular choice of the people. In 1956 the PNM was foisted on the people by the British Foreign Office that wanted in power leaders who can dance to their music and execute their policies. A similar act took place a decade earlier when the British partitioned India to create a puppet state called Pakistan that would facilitate the geo-political ambitions of the western powers in accessing the oilfields of Iran and other Gulf States.
Trinis must always allow reason to prevail. However, such a quality is foreign to Dr. Rowley and Raffique Shah. They are the kind of individuals that the one percenters want to have in office. Their interest is not in development of the country but in petty jealousies like Rowley focus on Kamla throughout his campaign. Imagine Shaw writing an entire column on a single statement made by Kamla on Covid 19!
Shaw and Rowley represent a mindset. They continue to act like servants carrying out the biddings of their masters. They have failed to develop an identity of their own. Like old mistresses, they will soon be relegated and replaced with young damsels with more plumb chest.
