Final Night Navratri Celebrations at Indo Carib Shree Sundar Gopal Mandir in Queens, NY, USA

The auspicious festival of Navratri Fall 2026 was celebrated with devotion, enthusiasm and spiritual fervour at Shree Sundar Gopal Mandir in Queens, New York, bringing mostly Caribbean devotees together to honour the Divine Mother and celebrate the rich traditions of Hinduism as practiced by Hindus in the Caribbean and the Caribbean Hindu diaspora. Navratri commenced on Oct 11 and concluded on Oct 19 with nightly puja and katha (discourse). All of the mandirs in NY held nightly services. Some mandirs also held service on Oct 10, the tenth night known as Vijay Dashmi.

Navratri, meaning “nine nights,” is dedicated to the worship of the nine manifestations of Goddess. I. Hinduism, God is both male and female and Hindus propitiate both. For every God, there is a Goddess.

During Navratri, Hindus worship Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati. Durga symbolises feminine power, courage, wisdom and the eternal triumph of good over evil. Lakshmi has to do with wealth and finance. Saraswati has to do with education and knowledge.

For the Indian and Indo-Caribbean communities of Queens, Navratri and other festivals also provide a cherished opportunity to preserve their ancestral traditions and pass their religious and cultural heritage to younger generations.

The celebrations reflected the deep faith and community spirit of devotees, for whom the mandir serves as an important centre of worship and fellowship. Through prayers, devotional observances and the collective expression of faith, Navratri renews spiritual bonds and strengthens the sense of unity among families and community members.

The festival’s message of righteousness, compassion and the victory of light over darkness resonates across generations and cultures. In a multicultural city like New York, such religious celebrations also highlight the valuable contribution of the Hindu community to the city’s diverse cultural landscape.

Devotees packed the Mandirs in Queens, Bronx, and Brooklyn. At Shree Sundar Gopal, they made offerings on the final night as they did nightly. The Navratri puja at Shree Sundar Gopal Mandir was a reminder that faith remains a powerful link between generations, connecting the Hindu diaspora with its spiritual roots and keeping India’s timeless traditions alive far from the motherland and retained in the Caribbean and transplanted in USA.
