Former Trinidad PM Panday has Passed On

Former Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Basdeo Panday passed away on New Year’s Day 2024 surrounded by family members. This was announced by his daughter Mickela. Bas was undergoing medical treatment at a hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. He was taken ill in Trinidad and flown to Florida for treatment.

Panday served as PM from October 1995 to December 2001. He entered Parliament in 1971 and served until May 2010. He was opposition leader from 1976 thru 1995 and again from 2002 to 2010 except for a brief period in 1977 and from 1987 to 1988. He lost his deposit at his first attempt for elective office in 1966 as a candidate for Workers and Farmers Party. He became a Senator in 1971 following the boycott of elections by the opposition protesting fraudulent elections.
