Four more Guyanese get Scholarships to India

Four Guyanese nationals were selected to study in India – two under the ICCR (Indian Council for Cultural Relations) Scholarships for master’s degrees and two under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) short-term scholarship programme.

Davendra Kissoon, an engineer with the National Drainage & Irrigation Authority from East Coast Demerara and Narupa Devi Singh, from Corentyne Berbice, who is also an engineer with the Ministry of Public Works were both selected to study Masters of Technology in Civil Engineering at the premier Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) for a period of two (2) years.

Selected for the ITEC programme were Sirpaul Jaikishun, a senior lecturer with the University of Guyana from Eccles, East Bank Demerara to study ‘Techniques in Mass Production, Quality Control of Biofertilizers and Microbial Bio-pesticides’ at the National Institutes of Plant Health Management, Hyderabad for a period of two (2 ) weeks. Indera Hoorilall, a Technical officer from the Guyana Forestry Commission of Herstelling, East Bank Demerara was selected for the ITEC Programme to study Climate Change & Sustainable Development at the Environment Protection Training & Research Institute in Hyderabad for two (2 ) weeks.

The four scholarship recipients called on and interacted with High Commissioner, Dr. KJ Srinivasa before travelling to India to commence their respective courses. Each participant expressed their gratitude and excitement for the opportunity to study in India being offered by the Government of India. High Commissioner discussed how sharing India’s own development experiences with fellow developing countries on the basis of partnership and cooperation for mutual benefit via scholarships, helps to strengthen the bond between India and Guyana.
