Sections 4 and 5 of the Constitution of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago allows for judicial review when someone is illegally imprisoned. In the case of the Hadeeds, the matter was brought before Justice Frank Seepersad and after listening to the arguments of their lawyers, the judge ruled against their release. Unfortunately, there are a few individuals who are of the opinion that such a ruling is unlawful. Nevertheless, if such individuals hold such opinion, then they should look for avenues to appeal the matter.
Gary Griffith, former Commission of Police, is one who is not happy with the ruling of Justice Frank Seepersad. Unfortunately, he is seeing the detention of the Hadeeds and other accomplices as victimization because “my blood don’t take you.” I love to hear opposing viewpoints because it helps to shed light on the issue and evolve the law. However, when a former CoP can be so non-sensical in his argument, I must ask: “Who had the guts to appoint such a man as a CoP? And when I searched my diary, I learned that it was the former UNC government under the leadership of Kamla Persad Bissessar. Equally damning, was his continuation in office under the PNM, thus confirming that politician like “smart” people at their beck and call!
Writing this bit to expose the ridiculous argument of Gary Griffith is giving him undue attention. Why is he so adamant for the release of the Hadeeds? Several poor people are imprisoned and have no power to file for judicial review. Why is Gary Griffith and his cohorts not fighting for them? More so, the Hadeeds don’t need Gary Griffith to fight on their behalf when they have already hired the services of senior counsels headed by Douglas Mendes, Farris Al Rawi and others.

Thankfully, Kamala Persad- Bissessar appears to have learned her lesson and today she has opted for people with talents and accomplishments at her side. Kamala Persad-Bissessar demonstrated that strength when she refused to have an accommodation with Gary Griffith to contest the last general election because he was, politically, a big loser. It is that boldness Kamla Persad Bissessar must adopt to run a successful government. Losers and neemakarams must be shown the door. And my “blood don’t take you” is not an argument!
