Guyana’ Syria Ship Wreck off coast of Fiji

The Syria, a sail ship, hit the reef of an island off the coast of Fiji in 1884 (May 11) killing 59 of 497 passengers. It is remembered annually in special activities in the village Naselai — the villagers rescued the survivors and helped buried the dead. This writer attended prayer activities last May 11 in the village. The Syria made several trips to the West Indies including Guyana.
