Hamilton Green Misinformation on Indian-African Relations in Guyana

N.Sahadeo

Dear Editor,

Reading anything by this person who calls himself Elder is like drinking Epson salt as a kid. You sit with it in front of you and take a long while before you gulp it down, all the while gagging. This missive in S.N. May 5th 2023,though, by the Elder; was like drinking a mixture of Salts and Senna.

The Elder said that…” the freed Africans welcomed the Immigrants.” Which Immigrants? Surely it is NOT the Indians.

And I choked again as I read these words…”The children of the immigrants rose to great heights to achieve levels of education and socialization-” because The Descendants of Africans who latched on to the British educational system became the earliest professionals and educators and they passed these skills lovingly to the Immigrants.” LOVINGLY? Which dimension does the Elder now exist in? These words from one of the architects of National Service that was one of the main reasons many young Indians fled Guyana. What effrontery!

And then in his usual style of reimagining his sordid past when he sat in the seat of power, Elder lectures of ”One, in a democracy, the ruling party seem unable to understand that the media for good reasons, must not be throttled, intimidated nor, as we see in the State-controlled media, those voices not saying the same thing be shut out.”

Am speechless. The gall of a gunda of Odo’s, stained with the blood of Father Darke. It cannot be dementia as sufferers remember the past and forget the present. So how can one rationalise the utterances of this person? And why do S.N. and K.N. allow the unsubstantiated ramblings of this person while they severely veto the writings of many, mine included when I write my truth? Why is this person still allowed to still wield his gunda power in GT?

As a Hindu, I believe that anyone can resolve and save their Souls but in order to do so, one has to take responsibilities for one actions-past and present. So as long as the Elder does not take responsibilities of his part of the sordid past of Guyana’s history, how can anyone read and take seriously anything he pontificates about?

Lastly, in the interest of putting History in its place, can this Elder explain why he/his party chose the date that coincides with the Wismar Genocide to mark Independence? Did he not feel the sufferings of those people because they were Indians? Now he infers that Cheddie and Burnham were wrong to push for Independence as he(Elder) plans to sing his praise to The King for the Coronation? What bollocks as the Brits would say.

Yours truly,
N.Sahadeo
