A transformative spiritual wave swept through the heart of Richmond Hill, Queens this past week (Sept 27 to Oct 3) as hundreds of devotees gathered nightly for a magnificent 7-night Shrimad Bhagavat Hari Katha, delivered by the revered spiritual leader Shripad Sudarsan Acharya Ji of Trinidad. It was held under the guidance of Bhaktivadanta Srila Narayan Maharaj at the private residence of Kissoon and Chandra Moonilal Singh and family at 105-37 132nd Street, Richmond Hill, New York. Shrimati Rajpattie of Guyana, Dharampatni of Sudarsan ji, served as emcee of the proceedings. The week-long discourse illuminated the gathering with the timeless teachings, divine pastimes, and philosophical depths of the Shrimad Bhagavat Mahapuran on Lord Krishna. It is a guidebook for human consciousness,” Acharya Ji emphasized during his Saturday evening session.
For seven consecutive nights, the Singh family residence, which has been serving as a temple with regular spiritual service, echoing with the resonant sounds of Vedic chants, soulful bhajan kirtans, and the profound wisdom of Vaishnava philosophy. Devotees from across the local Indo-Caribbean (Guyanese, Trinidadians, Surinamese and others) and Indian diaspora filled the beautifully decorated flat building nightly, immersing themselves in a spiritual journey aimed at fostering inner peace, family values, and deep devotion (bhakti). The shelter of Harikatha restores our mental peace and reawakens the dormant love for the Divine.
The Shrimad Bhagavat Katha is traditionally understood not merely as a recitation of ancient texts, but as a living spiritual experience. Shripad Sudarsan Acharya Ji, celebrated for his profound scholarship, humility, and moving delivery, brought the ancient scripture to life. His discourses masterfully connected the more than 5,000-year-old teachings of Lord Krishna with the challenges of modern everyday life, placing a special emphasis on family harmony and community unity.
Acharya Ji’s unique ability to blend deep theological insights with practical, contemporary examples resonated deeply with the audience. He spoke extensively on the importance of righteousness (dharma), selfless service (seva), and maintaining spiritual integrity while navigating a fast-paced, material world like New York City.
The seven nights were structured around the major milestones of the Bhagavat Mahapuran, each marked by specific spiritual themes and elaborate cultural celebrations: The Descent of the Divine, Krishna Birth Celebration, Govardhan Leela and Govedhan puja, Rukmini Vivah, among others.
The musical accompaniment throughout the week was exceptional. A talented troupe of musicians synchronized perfectly with Acharya Ji’s narrations and singing, leading the congregation into moments of meditative silence followed by bursts of joyful congregational chanting (sankirtan).
Beyond its religious significance, the 7-night Katha served as a monumental cultural anchor for Richmond Hill. By opening their private residence into a mandir, the community, the Singh family facilitated an intimate space that brought together multiple generations—from elderly to youths born in the US and from around the globe, listening intently to the translations and explanations of the holy scripture.
Hosting an event of this scale at a private residence is very costly and required immense coordination. A dedicated team of family members and neighborhood volunteers worked tirelessly around the clock to ensure seamless logistics and the daily preparation of Mahaprasadam—the sanctified vegetarian feast lovingly served to every attendee at the conclusion of each night’s program.
The attendees expressed deep gratitude to the hosts for opening their home to such a high-caliber spiritual leader. “Events like these are vital for our diaspora,” noted one of the regular attendees. “By opening their doors, the Singh family has allowed Shripad Sudarsan Acharya Ji to recharge our spiritual batteries and remind us of our roots, helping us pass down these invaluable values to the next generation right here in Queens.”
As the final night concluded with a grand Maha Aarti, the atmosphere, as was every evening, was thick with emotion. Devotees sang and clapped with tears of joy, deeply enriched by the wisdom they had absorbed.
Shripad Sudarsan Acharya Ji blessed the congregation and the host family, urging everyone to carry the peace and unity experienced during the Hari Katha into their homes, workplaces, and neighborhoods. As the final blessings were given at the Singh residence, it was clear that while the seven nights had concluded, the seeds of devotion, harmony, and wisdom sown in the hearts of devotees would continue to bloom for years to come.
