The High commission of India to Guyana has been celebrating India’s 75th Independence Anniversary with varied activities under AKAM.

Continuing with Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) week- India’s 75th Independence Anniversary celebrations, the High Commission of India, Georgetown organized a Special Week of activities to engage Non-Resident Indians, Guyanese and Foreign nationals residing in Guyana.
On 28th January, 2023 the mission celebrated World Hindi Day at the Indian Arrival monument, Palmyra Berbice with the local diaspora. The occasion was marked by presence of the Hon’ble Minister Dr. Vindhya Persaud and students of the Berbice High School, Hindu College, the Corentyne Comprehensive High School and Guyanese Alumni of the Hindi scholarship courses in India. The event included a cultural programme with the students of Hindu College, Dance teacher and students of SVCC, Hindi poem recitals by Indian nationals and members of Indian Diaspora, speeches by Guyanese Alumni in Hindi and speech by H.E. Dr. KJ Srinivasa, High Commissioner of India to Guyana and Hon’ble Dr. Vindhya Persaud, Minister of Human Services and Social Protection. Both High Commissioner and Hon’ble Minister, in their speeches, expressed support for Hindi to be added to local school’s curriculum, and extolled the ancient native of Hindi and its scientific basis.
The High Commission of India also organized a Tree plantation drive in collaboration with University of Guyana, Berbice Campus after World Hindi day programme on the lawns of the Indian Arrival monument, with a few trees planted in the presence of Hon. Minister Dr. Vindhya Persaud and other attendees of World Hindi day programme and at UoG Berbice Campus in the presence of its Director Dr. Gomathinayagam Subramanian, local diaspora and members of the High Commission. The trees, planted at both locations will be maintained by UG Berbice Campus.
On the 29th January, 2023, a Yoga Competition was organized at the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, with over 40 participants and other yoga enthusiasts and spectators. The participants were divided into four categories based on their age ranges and were asked to perform various postures. The judges included Ms. Ashwini, spouse of High Commissioner, Mr. Mohit Kumar, current Yoga Teacher in SVCC and Ms. Agnela Patil, a practicing Yoga teacher and former yoga teacher at SVCC. The winners were awarded with attractive cash prizes, certificates, trophies and medals.
On the same day, the mission in collaboration with the Strathspey Vishnu mandir and Georgetown Public hospital Corporation organized a Blood Donation Drive at the temple site. We had numerous donors from the mission, mandir and public and every donor received a certificate in recognition of part they played to help save a life.
