Let’s face reality. The Indian today who is still proud to call himself a Hindu is a symbol of strength and resistance. He has so far refused to succumb to the forces of Islam, Christianity, Communism, and naked and obscene secularism.
In other societies of the world -Greece, Egypt, Iran, Turkey, Africa, the Caribbean, Americas- the indigenous cultures and religions have been defeated and replaced with Christianity or Islam. But in India, our Hindu warriors and priests, and the common man and woman have laid down their lives to preserve their political and religious integrity.
As Hindus, we must be proud of our ancestors; they were certainly not weaklings. If today a billion-plus Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains of our dharmic faiths live, it is because of the heroic resistance of an array of warriors- Maharana Partap, Chatrapathi Shivaji, Porus, Shambhaji Maharaj, the Sikh warriors- Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, Guru Gobind Singh Ji and Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji- among others. In more recent times, history has recorded the heroism of Lakshmi Bai, the Rani of Jhansi, who led her army in revolt in the 1857 resistance that put to an end the arbitrary rule of the East India Company.
The Hindus who were defeated by Islamic invaders were converted to Islam. They were given a choice between death and Islam. Sometimes Hindus converted when their crop yield was low and they could not pay the oppressive taxes. The policy of the Islamic ruler was to offer a tax amnesty to those who converted to Islam. Nevertheless, the resistance to Islamic rule by the Hindu warriors and society was so great that the Islamic ruler had no choice but to relax his proselytization policy.
In the British era, it was similar. In this case, it was the carrot and stick policy. Those who converted were given the right to social mobility- western education and a job. Nevertheless, the vast majority of Indians opted to remain Hindus and suffer deprivations. This was played out in the role of the Christian churches. Those who converted were given an education and lower positions in the civil service while the vast majority of Indians were confined to agricultural work. Additionally, the education system was designed to present the west in a positive light while labeling every Indian custom as inferior.
Hindus have survived not only the onslaught of the Islamic invaders but also the cunning and astute British. The Canadian Mission that was encouraged by the British to proselytize Hindus came to a halt in 1952 when the Maha Sabha schools were opened. The Canadian missionaries understood that their defeat was near and packed their bags and left. Today the Presbyterian Church has a following of less the 3% of the national population. Once a Hindu, always a Hindu. Despite many Hindus being converted to other faiths, most remain proud of their Hindu heritage. As Indians become more aware of their history and tradition, they are going to be less inclined to be the foot soldiers for imperialist forces. The rise of India as a global power is awakening pride in all Indians. Most importantly, special praises and admiration should be given to those Hindus who refused to succumb to the might of Islam, Christianity, communism, and secularism. Hindu resistance is finally paying big dividends.
