The ideology, Hindutva, calls on all Indian citizens to recognize and accept Indian civilization as the cultural identity of the country irrespective of their religious beliefs. This ideology was coined by Veer Sarvakar (1883-1966), a leading freedom fighter in India’s long struggle for independence.
But Google has defined Hindutva as “an ideology seeking to establish the hegemony of Hindus and the Hindu way of life,” and added that it is “inspired by European fascism” and that it “emerged as a response to the intellectual and political challenges posed by British colonial rule.”
I want to say that hegemony is not synonymous with Hindus and that it is unfortunate that when an oppressed culture decided to protect its national heritage and sovereignty, it has to be branded fascist which is a European label of aggression against minorities as happened during Nazi rule in Germany. It is worthy of noting that the RSS, the vehicle of Hindutva, was born in 1925, long before fascism took power in Europe in the early 1930s.
With Hindutva as the core ideology, others have written and given lectures refining the ideology to appeal to a wider audience. Dr. Baliram Hedgewar (1849-1940), the founder of the RSS, made a thorough study of Indian history to decipher its fall from past glory. One fundamental point he discovered was that the Indian people fought for a personality or raja and when that individual was defeated they surrendered. Dr. Hedgewar noted that the British did not fight for a person but for a body of ideas that was symbolized by the Union Jack. He noted that in the battle field when the individual carrying the Union Jack was killed, another would lift the flag and the fighting continued. In the RSS, the Bhagwa Dwaj or flag is hoisted at the beginning and end of every session, and members would bow to the Bhagwa dwaj, not the leader. This explains why the BJP, unlike the Communist Party and the Congress, has never splintered into rival factions-it is not a personality cult.
In 1966 Sahitay Sindu Prakashana of Bangalore, India published BUNCH OF THOUGHTS by M. S. GOLWAKAR, the second head of the RSS. A reading of this text will provide a glimpse of the ideology of RSS/BJP.
Golwakar or Guruji was born in 1906 at Nagpur, Maharastra. A bright student, Golwarker went on to become a professor at his alma mater but had a strong spiritual urge to become a sanyasin. Returning to Nagpur to spend time with his parents, Dr. Hedgewar, the founder of the RSS, seeing his innate quality and potential, targeted him for recruitment in the RSS. In 1937 Golwakar joined the organization and there was no turning back. In 1940 when Hedgewar passed on, Golwakar succeeded him. It was Golwakar’s hard work and dedication that expanded the RSS, shaping it into a national force for good. Golwakar passed on in 1973.
One critical role Golwakar played in history was to influence the Maharaja of Kashmir to sign the treaty of accession for state to become part of India. Other leaders failed to convince the Maharaja. However, after his meeting with Golwakar, the Maharaja provided his signature to accede to India.
It was the RSS that foiled the attempt of the Pakistan Army to occupy Kashmir. Indian helicopters were unable to land troops because of heavy snow cover on the runways. The mobilization of RSS volunteers in record time got the task done to save Kashmir from falling into the arms of Pakistan.
The biggest disservice to politics in India has been the Communist Party. Their allegiance is across the border of India-China and Russia. The communists’ ineptitude was well displayed in West Bengal. After ruling for 34 years, with nothing to show, it was finally routed in 2011 by a woman, Mamata Banerjee, the political leader of the Trinamool Congress and the sitting Chief Minister,
The Communist leadership has been an ally of Indian National Congress-led governments in the past. An educated bunch, the communists accepted , one being education. JNU was made into an ideological nest for the left. Students were made to hate their Hindu identity as Indian history was distorted to paint the Brahmins as oppressive. Islam and the atrocities of Islamic invaders were white washed and presented to students as tolerant and embracing of India’s diverse cultural streams.
When the Muslims community agreed to settle the Ram Temple, it was the communist that kept it alive and today it can be concluded that the leaders who are driving the hate campaign against India both locally and abroad are the communists.
They were active in the protests against the CAA and were responsible for fanning fears in the minds of Muslims that their citizenship was under threat. The hands of the communists are also present in the farmers’ protests in the Punjab against the reform laws.
Communist sympathizers are working in media houses abroad and as lecturers in universities and are using their knowledge to misrepresent the facts of the Modi government. They are aligned with the Democrats of the USA and the Labour Party in the UK, all in an effort to distort the facts to suit their agenda which has flopped.
While the politics of the Congress is divided on trying to foist a dynasty on the people, the BJP is surging ahead with Hindutva.
