Indian Arrival Day Message from Couva South MP

Trinidad map

Today, as we commemorate the 178th anniversary of the arrival of the first Indian indentured laborers to Trinidad and Tobago, MP for Couva North, Ravi Ratiram, reflects on the incredible journey and enduring legacy of our East Indian ancestors.

On May 30, 1845, the Fatel Razack docked on our shores, bringing with it 225 East Indians who embarked on a journey across the kala pani (dark water) from India to Trinidad, West Indies. From 1845 to 1917, a total of 147,592 individuals came to Trinidad to work as indentured laborers on various plantations, including the expansive cane fields of Couva North.

Our forefathers faced numerous challenges as they settled in a new land. Yet, their resilience, strength, and determination enabled them to integrate seamlessly with the other islanders they met here. Their hard work and dedication laid the foundations for the vibrant and diverse society we cherish today. The East Indian ancestors have withstood the test of time, contributing significantly to the cultural, social, and economic fabric of our nation. Their legacy is one of resilience, perseverance, and immense contribution.

As we pay tribute to those who came before us, it is crucial to remember the sacrifices they made and the perseverance they exhibited. Their cultural heritage, values, and traditions have been passed down through generations, enriching our nation’s diversity. The cane lands of Couva North, once tilled by the hands of these industrious laborers, stand as a testament to their labor and contributions.

As we celebrate Indian Arrival Day today, let us honor our ancestors by embracing diversity and working towards a more equitable society. We must continue to uphold the legacy of resilience and unity that our forefathers exemplified. May our presence be a positive and lasting one for present and future generations.

On this special occasion, MP Ravi Ratiram extends heartfelt wishes to all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. Let us come together to celebrate our rich cultural heritage and the significant contributions of our East Indian community. Happy Indian Arrival Day!
