INDO-CARIBBEANS HONORED AT DIWALI CELEBRATION in QUEENS, NEW YORK

Dr. Sharla Madho-Khargi and Mr. Nagassar Ramgarib were honored with a CITATION of HONOR for their community service by Queens Borough President Donovan Richards at a Diwali celebration held at the Hindu Center in Flushing, New York, on Thursday, October 16, 2025.

The other honorees were: Jain Center of America, Ashif Ahmed, Shreeya Tuladhar, Sumi Sarkar and Dr. Vipul Patel.

Dr. Madho-Khargi, of Guyanese origin, is Director of Clinical/Community Services for the Indian Diaspora Council (IDC). She is a clinical psychologist who is in private practice in Queens, NY. She is trained in Cognitive Behavior therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Psychoanalysis. Currently an adjunct faculty at St. John’s University and City University of New York. She is also a Mental Health Consultant to the Ministry of Public Health for mental health services in Guyana. Currently serves as the Director of Clinical/Community Services for the Indian Diaspora Council (IDC) and has been conducting research internationally for the past 12 years with a focus on mental illness, domestic violence, and disability in both children and adults. She is past president of the division of psychoanalysis for the NYS Psychological Association (NYSPA), and serves as a member of NYSPA the disaster recovery network.

Upon receiving her CITATION of HONOR, Dr. Madho-Khargi remarked:
“It is such an esteemed honor to be recognized by the Borough president Mr. Donovan Richards and his office, among the other well deserved recipients. Serving this community with the mentorship of Mr. Ashook Ramsaran, Mr. Mohammed Hack, Dr. Dhanpaul Narine, the late Harbajan Singh, and others, is a privilege. I hope to continue my work, paving it forward to raise and acknowledge challenges with mental health”.

Mr. Nagasser Ramgarib, who is originally from Trinidad and Tobago, is the former president of Queens Village Civic Association and vice president of Queens Civic Congress. He is a long time community advocate and campaigned on many issues of interest throughout his civic service. Upon receiving his Citation, he remarked:

“I am sincerely honored to receive the Citation of Honor from Queens Borough President Donovan Richards. This recognition of my work with the Queens Village Civic Association and Community Board 13Q is deeply meaningful.

Serving our community is a source of great fulfillment and one of the cornerstone of my values. This citation reflects not just my efforts, but the dedication of those who advocate for maintaining the quality of life in the neighborhoods we choose raise our families and find our small corners of peace. I will continue in my commitment to be a steadfast champion for my neighbors”.
