The Knox Street and Environs Sporting and Cultural Association of San Fernando, South Trinidad has embarked on its preparation for staging its annual Ramleela on11-13th October, 2024 at Robin’s Park on Knox Street, San Fernando, Trinidad.
Scores of kids and young adults came out accompanied by their parents and elders at the Park last Sunday. Led by Amral Persad and assisted by Mitra Maharaj, the training started at 4p.m. and went on for the next two hours. The trainees were attentive and enthusiastic throughout and joyfully carried out the instructions. Most of the trainees have participated in previous Ramleelas and were efficient in executing the dance routines.
Several elders including Jamwant Maharaj and his brother Maldeo were present and looking on critically. The elders are the backbone of the Ramleela festivals providing the moral, financial and logistic support to ensure a successful Ramleela.
The first Ramleela was held in 2000. The success of this event expanded to include the celebration of Indian Arrival Day and Phagwa. In the beginning these events were done collaboratively with the Maha Sabha. Today, however, the programs are left on the shoulders of the Association and they have risen to the challenge exceptionally.
“The major support for the Ramleela is drawn from the devotees of the Krishna Mandir,” said Maldeo.
The training for the Ramleela will continue weekly before its staging on the 11-13th October, 2024. “ We are looking forward to a bigger and brighter Ramleela this year,” said Jamwant.
