Mookhesswur

I had the privilege to participate in the 4th International Conference themed “Bharat, Girmitiya, and Africa: Historical, Cultural, and Strategic Cooperation,” organized by the Forum for Awareness of National Security (FANS) in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution, Jamia Millia Islamia University, held on March 5th and 6th, 2024, at the University of Delhi.

Under the adept leadership of Mr. Vikramaditya Singh, the Sah Sangathan Mahamantri of FANS, and the guidance of Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, the Convenor from Jamia Millia Islamia, the conference saw active participation from numerous academics, research scholars, and institutions such as the Centre for Himalayan Studies, University of Delhi, and the Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi.

Representatives from 29 African countries, Girmitiya nations, and Indian universities, whether in person or virtually, contributed to the diverse discussions spanning across 14 thematic areas. Notably, delegates from Mauritius, including Satyendra Peerthum, Head of Technical Unit from Aapravasi Ghat, and myself as a former Ambassador and President of Gopio International, presented papers on significant topics like the “Indenture Labour Route Project” and “Bharat and Girmitiya: Emerging Trends.”

My engagement extended beyond paper presentations. I was honored to be invited as the Guest of Honor during the Inaugural Ceremony, where I delivered a speech that resonated with the audience, shedding light on the origins of the term “Girmitiya” and their arduous journeys from the port of Kolkata, formerly Calcutta, aboard sailing ships reminiscent of a bygone era.

On the second day, I continued to contribute by addressing the theme “Bharat, Girmitiya: Emerging Trends,” wherein I elaborated on Mauritius and other Indian Ocean islands, emphasizing their Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) and the surrounding maritime security concerns. The reception of my insights was overwhelmingly positive, further cementing the success of the conference.

In attendance were esteemed guests, including Dr. Indresh Kumar Ji, Chief Patron of FANS and National Executive Member of RSS, Shri Golok Behari Ji, and Shri Vikramaditya Singh from FANS, alongside distinguished figures from academic and administrative realms.

The audience, comprising deans, professors, defence and civil service representatives, researchers, and social thinkers, enriched the discussions with their diverse perspectives and expertise.

In conclusion, my participation in the conference proved to be a fruitful endeavour, fostering dialogue, sharing knowledge, and strengthening international cooperation on multiple fronts.

I am attaching the speech I delivered on the 6th for your perusal.

Thank you,
