Dear Editor,

The past week witnessed the unexpected deaths ofFOUR children, 3 within the Berbice, region. Naiomi Raghu, 8, a pupil at the New Market Primary School, was treated at the Skeldon Public Hospital after she had fever, vomiting and diarrhea. She was eventually transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where she was administered an injection that sent her into convulsions resulting in her death a short time later. The Ministry of Health launched an investigation into the deaths of 9-year-old Arianna and her brother Ricardo Mahabir. The siblings died one day apart(April 14,15) at the New Amsterdam Hospital.

Malachi Mosely, a 14-year-old of Bare Root, East Coast Demerara, and student of Buxton Secondary, died on Thursday afternoon at about 15.30 hours at the Dr. CC Nicolson Hospital in Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara, after experiencing bouts of diarrhea, dizziness, and vomiting.

These senseless deaths are tragic reflection of the pathetic state of Guyana’s health care system; a society where human life has been relegated to the back benches while pump stations add road construction has become a foremost priority.
