NY Street named after Indian-Caribbean Pandit

A street in Jamaica, Queens, New York on the corner of Jamaica Ave and 173rd Street, was co named on Saturday afternoon September 17 at a special ceremony. Several dignitaries attended the special ceremony under a tent at the yard of the late Pandit Laldharry Seeratan, an Indian Guyanese, after who the street was co named. Politicians and community leaders and family members delivered short tributes to the late pandit and to the mandir that he founded for their community work. The late pandit and the Shri Devi Mandir has been involved in community work for over three decades nit only in USA, but also in the Caribbean and in India. The street where the pandit once lived was named after him.

The President of Queens Boro Mr Donovan Richards showered accolades on the Mandir, it’s founder, and his family as well as the Guyanese community for their contributions to the city and state of New York.

Pandit Laldharry Seeratan was born on Oct 5, 1933 and died in 2020. He was from 56 Village

He migrated to USA in 1983. He founded the Sri Devi Mandir in 1988 in Jamaica, Queens. He performed selfless service in Guyana and New York. He donated funds to various worthwhile causes including to assist victims of natural disasters in India, Pakistan, Haiti, and Guyana. He was involved in charitable activities for victims of hurricanes in the US. He also sponsored Thanksgiving lunch in the Senior Citizen Center in Richmond Hill that process for Indo Caribbean people. Shri Devi Mandir Global Humanitarian Foundation. The organization distributes food hampers, school supplies and laptop computers in Guyana and gave out scholarships to Guyanese based on merit and needs.

Dr Dhanpaul Narine emceed the proceedings where tributes were uttered on the pandit, the mandir, and the Seeratan family.
