ODE TO JAI

Cliff Rajkumar

The light of my life has abandoned me to the anguish of grief.

I lament this parting with wretched despair.
Your sweet fragrance and joyful infectious smile
Are forever etched in my heart.

Painful emotions overwhelm my intellect and rationality.
Foolishly, I question: How can this be. Why you? Why me?

Wisdom forsakes my better judgement
As I surrender to the agony of this priceless loss
Which haunts my mind and soul.

So suddenly and without warning,
The lord of death confined my precious gem to the bosom of eternity.

Time has passed but the suffering lingers.
The bond of a father and son is unbreakable and undying.
The mystery of life and death is a secret only the creator understands.

God knows best, I am told.
But the consolation is fleeting and hollow.
A lesson I have come to accept, with painful distress and self-torture.

Visitors are we all, in this glorious miracle of life.
Yet! We cling and claim ownership to that which really belongs to time.
Now, I unwillingly surrender to the fate of destiny
Since…Impermanence does not discriminate.

Like the life-giving rain which comes to nurture mother earth,
In a timeless cycle of benevolence to create and sustain life.
So too, you came to give joy to all who were blessed to know you.
