Ramayana in the park 2024

OVERVIEW

The Federation of Hindu Mandirs proudly presents the 15th edition of Ramayan in the Park (RITP 2024). Leading Pandits in the Tri-state area expound on Shree Ram’s Katha with one Kanda each night, starting from Baal Kanda and concluding with Uttar Kanda over the seven nights. Over the years we have successfully completed 120 sessions at RITP. Thanks and appreciation to everyone who contributed to making this possible. This year we had a beautiful blend of Vyasa Jis from different backgrounds and ranging in age from their thirties to their seventies.

Ramayan in the Park is not just another Yajna in Queens; rather, it goes beyond that for Hindus in North America. It is a symbol of our Sanskriti (culture), our identity and our sense of belonging here in NYC. Indeed, it serves as a means of inspiration and strength for all Hindus throughout the USA and Canada.

THEME

The theme of RITP 2024 is ‘Dharma protects those who protect it’ as seen throughout the Ramayan. We see a diverse group of brave warriors (Banar, Bhalu, Pakshi, Nar etc.) coming together with a united front never seen before to defeat adharma. In the very beginning of Ramcharitramanas, we see Sant Tulsidas Ji paying homage to all, regardless of status, karma, social standing or reputation, implying that Shree Ram’s Katha is for all, i.e., in spite of our own diverse way of existence, there is one underlying name which can save us all – SHREE RAM.

Ramayana is presented as ‘ITIHASA’, meaning it is how it happened – with a beautiful blend of poetry and historical facts. Too long and too often we hear folks referring to Ramayana as Hindu mythology – RITP shatters this age-old disinformation, ensuring that the next generation is clear about their history. My friends, Rama Sethu is real, Janma Bhumi and Ayodhya exist, Lanka is still there, and Rama, who killed the evil King Ravana, exists.

We are now witnessing a growing trend of Rama’s storyline used by Bollywood and other similar groups with little regard to maintaining its accuracy, sanctity, bhakti and purity. RITP provides a unique opportunity to correct these distortions, especially in the minds of the youths and present it in its original authentic form.

HINDU YOUTH CONCERT

The Grand Hindu Youth Concert kicked off Ramayana in the Park, and was a vibrant celebration of culture and tradition, showcasing the talents of young performers from various communities. A highlight of the event was the skit performed by campers from Shri Surya Narayan Mandir, who brought to life the timeless epic of the Ramayana. Their portrayal of key characters, including Lord Rama, Mother Sita, and Rishi Valmiki was both captivating and inspiring. The campers’ dedication and artistry not only entertained the audience but also deepened their appreciation for the rich heritage of the Ramayana. The skit depicted the transformative journey of Sage Valmiki, who was initially a robber named Ratnakar. After encountering the great sage Narada, Ratnakar underwent profound meditation and devoted himself to Lord Vishnu. This transformation culminated in his rebirth as Valmiki, the revered Rishi. Inspired by the divine story of Lord Ram and his unwavering commitment to dharma, Valmiki penned the Ramayana, thus immortalizing the epic tale for generations to come. The campers’ performance highlighted these pivotal moments, emphasizing how Valmiki’s life and experiences shaped his creation of the Ramayana.

RENOWNED GUEST SPEAKER

Ramayana In The Park would not have been possible without the support of our community leaders. On Thursday, July 25rd, Inspector Ralph Clement, Commanding Officer of the 103rd Precinct attended the event, emphasizing the significance of community collaboration and engagement. Inspector Clement, a proud Guyanese himself, spoke about his personal connection to the community, having lived in Queens for many years. This connection, he explained, enhances his ability to understand and serve the diverse needs of the area within his precinct. His presence and words highlighted the importance of unity and support from local authorities in making cultural events like these successful. Inspector Clement’s involvement was a testament to the strength and cohesiveness of our community, ensuring that such enriching cultural celebrations can continue to thrive.
