Self-interest or the national interest: How Indians Intellectual/Politicians got fooled.

In a Bugs Bunny cartoon, Bugs visited the leaning tower of Pisa in Italy and one of his nemesis followed to get him. To get him off his back Bugs decided to “trick” this hapless fool. Knowing very well he was being followed, Bugs visited the leaning tower and pushed against it with his hands- “come quickly hold it up with your hands, I am going to get help.” Bugs happily pranced away as the hapless fool believes he was saving humanity.  Of course the tower is not falling, but Bugs succeeded in fooling his nemesis that it was.

We were told in 1992 that forgiveness of PNC criminals would lead to peace and unity. Well, what happened?  To my knowledge not one Indian intellectual or Politician called for Justice. Juxtaposed this with what went on in Argentina, Chile, El Savador and Guatemala where elected leaders were held responsible for their actions.

Dictator Hoyte was a party to the various secret deals the PPP made with the United States in return for free and fair election. Dictator Hoyte decided to use the opportunity to extract even more   anti-Indian riots after the 1997 elections.  Then came the Herdmanston Accord and St. Lucia agreements, and a few years later we had the massacres, and the prison breaks. Indians were terrorized around Buxton and record murder rates were directed at Indians. Even then, no Indian Politician called for Justice.

The Opposition had succeeded in manipulating the Indian psyche that going after the Opposition leadership is not an option. Even ordinary Indians on the street would respond “no, putting PNC criminals on trial will lead to more violence.” Yet, we’re bombarded by the PPP and their supporters that Guyana is a “Democracy,” – this gotta be a strange version of Democracy where Opposition leaders are immune from the laws of the land and the Gov’t has the right to pick and choose which laws it wants to enforce!

Reading through ICDN.Today, I see all kinds of solutions being proposed, except the one that always works, law enforcement.  With the PPP handcuffed with secret deals (illegal by the way), Indian activists should have utilized international laws that Guyana has signed, forcing them to reveal their hands. This would have additional benefits as Indians are scheduled to be a minority soon, thereby setting a legal precedent that the Opposition has to watch their backs even if they’re back in power.

The Opposition has no interest in “share governance” or strengthening democracy” or federalism; in fact they’re at a disadvantage if Guyana improves. Why endorse federalism, if you’re close to attaining power for life and get the whole country.  Their job is to “sabotage the PPP” as predicted and make the country “ungovernable” as Hoyte said.  The Opposition has succeeded in reducing the Indian population from 52% to just 39% through terror. With just a margin of victory of 15,000, they’ll get even more ferocious at accomplishing this goal. The PPP-the perfect useful idiots- enabled this strategy by neglecting its own supporters and not marginalizing its opponent supporters, thereby confining itself to certain defeat.

As long as Indian intellectuals and Politicians are trying to “solve” the political problems and are more concerned with the illusion of peace by appeasement the Opposition will have the advantage in the war of attrition.
