Dear Editor,
A report a few days ago in Guyana Times stated that GECOM will soon resolve the matter of Dr Asha Kissoon (of TNM) squatting on a parliamentary seat that rightly belongs to ANUG. The paper reported that GECOM awarded the seat to LJP of Mr Lennox Shuman and not the other parties.
A pre-election agreement among the three parties in 2020 called for rotation of time in parliament based on a proportion of votes won. The TNM was to serve last for less than a month. ANUG allowed TNM to serve its time first fearing an early dissolution of parliament that would preclude it from serving any time in parliament. Dr Kissoon was sworn in after Shuman honored the agreement and stepped down a year ago. Dr Kissoon has refused thus far to honor the signed agreement. No one has gone to court to enforce it.
The Times article quoted GECOM as saying the seat was awarded to LJP as it won the largest amount of the votes of the joinder list and not to the other parties. That being the case, Shuman, as head of the list, can simply notify GECOM and parliament recalling Kissoon and appointing ANUG’s representative.
Yours faithfully,
Vishnu Bisram
