“Politics is not a tea party. It is civilized warfare,” said Basdeo Panday. Panday has also said that “Politics has a morality of its own.” A parliamentarian who attended Sunday School where she learned “Yes, I know Jesus Loves Me” and a few from the LGB community (the QT was not added then) were very offended and hurt. They felt that their moral scruples were violated and stained.
If Dr. Keith Rowley is considered crude and rough and tumble, politics, the struggle for power, allows that. Your opponents want you out and before they take your out, you must finish them! But, when the UNC is packed with some who took their moral and spiritual values from Sunday school, then such a political party is destined to be in the opposition, and for a very long time. It is certain that had they read the Mahabharata and the Chanak Niti they would have known otherwise! Unfortunately, their learning never went beyond Sunday School.
Kamla Persad-Bissessar was right to make a call for a recount in five marginal constituencies and the UNC candidates have all rights to scrutinize carefully and express their dissatisfaction with the counting process. Needless to say, there are politicians and aspiring politicians who felt otherwise. Their hubris is that Kamla must go! They need not put up an argument to make the EBC liable for breaches of the electoral process. Like a programmed robot, their refrain is “Kamla must go!” Not surprisingly, social media is ablaze with posts by PNMites mocking the UNC!
But not all is lost! Robber barons have always run the show-the Rockefellers and the Goulds that called the shots. It was their loot that set the stage for US economic expansion. Today, we can behold the great nation that is the US and its legacy of ranchers and cowboys transforming a nation from a cow belt to an industrial megapolis and the largest capital market in the world.
But here in T&T, we have a 1% that have chosen the PNM to run for them. More than that they have developed the rules of the game and identified the personnel to manage and execute. The role of the EBC in this election and previous ones are being ignored by the “Kamla must go” posse. The reality is that they don’t have the testicular fortitude to charge the EBC with elections irregularities! They don’t have the guts to tell Rowley that the EBC is not beyond reproach and his race relations and general conduct leave much to be desired…who will bell the cat!
I am not at all defending Kamla or advocating for a change of leadership. If today, the UNC has failed to grasp power and hold on to it, it is only solely because its supporters and financiers do not have the sophistication and wherewithal to wrest power. Imagine that the members of SATT (Supermarket Association of Trinidad and Tobago) were pressured to ban Ramsaran Dairy Products by a member who has a long association with PNM! What does that say about Indian businessmen? Do they wish to pack shelves in Massy or make deliveries for KFC?
Behind the PNM is the 1% and an active media backed by bureaucrats and other state institutions that want to see a PNM return to power. Can Indian businessmen ever come to realize the forces that are arrayed against them? Can someone say how many donations do Indian businessmen makes to the UNC? The truth is the PNM camp in Toco/Sangre Grande was awashed with hampers from Indian contractors!
The solution for the UNC is to revisit its Constitution. This is the solution and not the blogging of every Jack and Jill with the cry “Kamla must go.” In 2010 these individuals were cussing Basdeo Panday and praising Kamla!
Panday was removed in 2010 and soon Kamla will have to vacate but the problem of the EBC and voter padding through the HDC will continue to work against the best interest of the UNC.
