Dear Editor,
I do not traditionally attend many religious celebrations out of respect for the people who are celebrating their moment. Some politicians and others seeking national attention can be seen in Kurtas and other Indian wear at almost every celebration held by our people of East Indian ancestry.
Similarly, others are seen in their African outfits at almost every celebration of African festivals. While this may seem to give the image of unity and coming together, there is nothing to be gained from simply appearing to unite. Trinidad & Tobago needs real unity, sincere appreciation of our diversity and an end to tokenism.
What is the point of appearing at these festivities all dressed up in the outfits, smiling at the media when in one’s heart there is an absence of sincerity, an absence of concern and in many cases no understanding of the occasion?
Our religious communities have their celebrations, many of which are incorporated into national holidays.
These however are celebrations that have become necessary for religious or spiritual reasons. They usually are anchored in traditions or beliefs that has nothing to do with politics. Why then should such celebrations be contaminated with political aspirants paying token tribute to the community simply for political gain? Doesn’t such action go against the very celebrations?
Religious and spiritual celebrations are mankind’s moments of recognition of a force superior to that of humanity. Those are very solemn moments that ought not to be contaminated by one’s selfish desires.
As the world confronts the many challenges of climate change, food security, social instability and economic challenges, the need to reach out for some level of spiritual intervention is perhaps more urgent or pertinent. The major requirement here is sincerity. If one is to arrive at any successful conclusion real or imagined, it must come from a place of one’s interpretation of truth.
Trinidad & Tobago is exceedingly fortunate to have among our population variety. Diversity is common in race, religion, social status, and many other social groupings. This fantastic mix has allowed us to appreciate, different cultural expressions, a variety of foods, music, fashion, art, and religions. This is our strength. Through our diversity we have lived in harmony, tolerated various governments, and continue in our struggle to improve the quality of life for our families.
Now is not the time for any divisiveness, not the time for us to turn our back on the gains we have made socially or politically. The time is perfect for our people to come together and arrive at solutions to the many challenges that are confronting not only Trinidad & Tobago but the world at large.
We have the people, the political will, the education, the finances, and the ability to form a strong nation of one people, under one flag with a sincere goal of equality of opportunities for all our people.
Now is the time for real unity and an end to tokenism.
