Now that yesteryear actress, Asha Parekh, has faded from the silver screen it is only right that the rising Asha Javed be acknowledged for her talent. Like her or hate her, she appears to understand where power lies. Today she is president of MATT- Media Association of Trinidad and Tobago. That is certainly an achievement and given the proximity of the media to power-the fourth estate-Asha Javed has done well. Who knows? She can one day become the Dowager of this twin-island republic!
Who would have given Asha Javed a job as a journalist? Certainly not the UNC and its financiers who appears to be alienated from the role of media in the politics. Had they known the value of media in the power structure, they would have had Asha Javed and Ira Mathur at their sides. But unfortunately, the UNC believes in a generous and sympathetic media which is truly the wish of a fool.
In the USA the media houses have declared their political bias in so many words. Here are a few of the top newspapers read by the Republicans: The New York Times, The Daily Mail, The Washington Post, New York Daily News, Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune.
The following news networks are pro Democrat: CNN, MSNBC, CBS and NBC among others.
This media bias is not confined to the USA but found in all democratic nations including India, the largest democracy on earth.
Unfortunately, it is only the UNC that appears to have a problem with newspapers supporting a particular political party. That is the norm in the democratic world and it is about time the UNC comes to term with this reality and take action to address it, not by questioning the morality of editors but by establishing pro-UNC media houses.
I must congratulate Anil Roberts who took the initiative to create a pro-UNC blog called Douglar Politics. Through this medium Anil Roberts does not bow and plead but lagaway mukdar “fire blows unapologetically”. If today there is a UNC supporter that understands power it is Anil Roberts. He is ruthless and fearless and intelligent, not a crab catcher parading as a politician.
Kudos must also go out to Michael Kerr, Lennox Smith and Andy Williams of The Ground Report (104.7 FM) for their unrelenting attacks on the policies of the PNM. Led by Michael Kerr, The Ground Report has gone a step further to regularly mobilize its supporters to take to the streets to protest against the PNM’s mismanagement, cronyism and corruption.
While it’s all part of the politics to criticize the anti-UNC media houses and journalists working in them, the UNC is being naïve if it expects them to change their policies. The alternative is to strengthen the pro-UNC social blogs and introduce new ones.
Several UNC sympathizers are actively writing pro-UNC articles in social media and attacking the PNM fortress. It is therefore the duty of the UNC to identify with and support these men and women, if not openly at least covertly.
These pit bulls are not paid bloggers but do so because they recognize that PNM is not good for this country. It is incumbent on the UNC to develop a working relationship with these individuals and groups and not view them as additional mouths to benefit from the plums of office.
This renegade media is reminiscent of the English and French pirates that raided Spanish towns and ships in the New World. Led by Sir John Hawkins, Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh, these seadogs were covertly supported by the Queen Elizabeth, the virgin queen. So, if Kamla wants to win this political war, she needs to take a hint from Queen Elizabeth and surround herself with real men…men with a capital M rather than yard boys, caddies, bartenders and chefs…house servants.
Speaking like a lady with an Oxonian accent would certainly fly over the heads of Dr. Keith Rowley and his supporters. It is Trini dialect in its pristine and crude outpourings that is going to get the job done, not employing reasoning and following the Mays Parliamentary Procedures.
The UNC’s biggest setback comes from playing the victim card. The reality is that no one wants to identify with a victim. Look at the Palestinians …they have been playing the victim card for the past 70 years with limited to no success. No one is interested in hearing your complaints. People want to share in your successes and triumphs. They want good news!
It would be better that the UNC go on the offensive against those bias journalists and media houses to expose the corruption of the PNM. Groups like the parasitic oligarchy and the 1% should be manipulated with propaganda. TALK BIG…TELL BIG LIES…IT IS THE DHARMA OF POLITICIANS! UNC must shed it Sunday school-style politics and fight Rowley with his own tactics…fight fire with fire!
