Why should the police shoot Jonah ‘Kirby’ George of Diego Martin for brandishing a gun at them? In light of the Taliban coming to power in Afghanistan, the police need to revise its attitude towards gun and violence. What is most startling, from the report I read, was a man who identified himself as Mohammed who came forth and said that he was not there but heard gun shots and disputed the police account of events. I hope the police took Mohammed seriously!.
The police claimed that they had reports that George was selling marijuana and had guns in his possessions. What goes through the minds of people like George must be ascertained. How does George view the world, his relationship with fellow men and authority including the police and the laws of the land?.
Looking at news and seeing the Taliban fully armed, beating and shooting protesters and women, must have an impact on the minds of people who feel marginalized and oppressed. More so, there is a narrative that paints some people as oppressed, thus giving them the right to struggle or wage jihad to liberate themselves.
Today we have 57 member-states of the Organization of Islamic Council and all of them hold the view that the Taliban must be given a chance to rule. None has so far condemned the violence of the Taliban and its use of violence to take power. Looking at global news, it is natural that Muslims endorse the Taliban. Is it written in the Quran that a Muslim must always support rightly or wrongly the actions of another Muslims?
The forty- odd millions of Muslims in Afghanistan appears to be of insignificance compared to the Islamists that took power in Kabul. No Islamic country or group is protesting against the violence of the Taliban against its very own Muslim women. Yet, we have always been witnessesd to global outrage by Muslims when the western democracies and India attempt to enforce its laws against Muslim minorities.
A caricature of the Prophet in a French magazine saw violent protests across the major cities of the Islamic world-Karachi, Delhi, Dhaka, Ankara, Cairo, Tehran and even London. So, the Muslim world has the power to protest perceived wrong. but not the wrongs of the Taliban? In the eyes of Muslims the Taliban are the new bench mark of Islamic society.
While Muslims in India support the Taliban, none of them want to migrate to Afghanistan. They are interested in migrating to the UK, Germany, Italy, France, the US, Canada etc. The migrants that left Afghanistan on foot are not heading for Turkey (who have built a wall) but have their eyes on Europe.
George was accused of peddling marijuana and that was enough reason to make him a social misfit. However, the Taliban are earning their revenues from the sale of opium and the 57 Islamic countries do not seem to have a problem. It is time for our democracies to update our laws so that George would have the right to earn a living as much as the Taliban.
The Taliban has legitimized violence and drugs and the Islamic world has endorsed it. The question must be asked: What moral authority do Muslims have on society? Is drinking alcohol still haram? What about education for girls? Is that not forbidden according to Islam? And who am I to condemn the Taliban when they are following the dictates of the Quran and, hadiths?
Had George been living in Afghanistan, he would have had the right to bear arms and sell marijuana but not alcohol and pork which are haram. Who knows, he might have been a member of the Afghan’s Cabinet!
