In Indian tradition the lion is presented as a symbol of contentment. A lion would never kill a prey if it is not hungry. Sai Baba said that it is for this reason that it is called King of the Jungle.
The lion is also a symbol of protection of all who sought shelter from him. The king or raja carries the title Singh which means lion. It is said that if another animal surrenders to a lion seeking protection, the lion is duty bound to protect it. The story is told of Sheba Rana, a king, who protected a dove who was being pursued by a crow for his meal. The crow demanded that the king handed over his prey but the king denied him, arguing that ‘this creature sought my protection and I am duty bound to protect him.’ The king, instead, cut the flesh from his body, the equivalent of the weight of the dove, to appease the crow so that the dove would live.
The great leaders of the world are like lions. They never bow their heads to the might of injustice. Mahatma Gandhi stood up to the British and insisted that they leave India. When other leaders were petitioning the Queen for concessions, Gandhi demanded that the British quit India.
A British trained lawyer, Gandhi had tremendous admiration for British legal and political systems. However, that did not compromise his Indian identity to borrow wholesale western culture. Gandhi was proud to dress in traditional Indian clothing; he upheld a vegetarian diet which was the meal for millions of Indian and he was a proud Hindu. He condemned conversion to Christianity referring to converts as ‘rice Christians’ and described the Muslims as ‘bullies’ for their fanaticism.
Basdeo Panday gave us the formula to defeat the PNM. He was instrumental in uniting the opposition forces against the PNM that misruled the country uninterrupted from 1956 to 1986. The defeat of the PNM demonstrated that the PNM was not invincible.
Panday struggled and won better working conditions and increased wages for the sugar cane workers. It was this wage increase and the provision of work throughout the year that contributed to the economic boom that impacted on central and south Trinidad. Many businesses houses opened their doors and flourished; and there was an increase in the number of students pursuing tertiary education.
Who are the jackals?
The jackal is an animal that is very sly. It does not hunt as such but would eat the remains of the lion after it had its fill. Individuals who are opportunists and slithering, always backbiting and willing to tell lies and spread falsehoods for personal benefits are like jackals. They are the ones who label the Indian community negatively to win the approval of the enemies so that they can win a contract.
There is a jackal in central Trinidad. He is a land grabber with no respect for the rights of other farmers. Never mind the entire community is suffering under flood waters and other forms of discriminations. With a low and debased consciousness, the jackals are contented eating the crumbs that fall out of the leader’s plate. A few of them even carry the name SINGH!
Narendra Modi has to contend with his share of jackals! Many file depositions before the US Congress crying atrocities being committed against Christians by the Modi government of India. They are staff members at newsrooms and universities abroad. Many jackals believe that the BBC, CNN, and The Economist are the embodiment of truth. They have absolutely no respect for their culture and values, and take instructions from Washington, Beijing, Islamabad and London to enjoy all expenses paid trips abroad.
As for the jackasses they are in abundance. They may be bright but lack common sense. When Jackass went hunting with Lion, though he did not catch any game he demanded 50% (fifty fifty) of the spoils. Jackass’s simplicity is beyond imagination! The result was his death!
Jackass culture abounds in this land. They are the crazy ones seen driving around in their motor cars on the roads causing traffic jams, flocking the bars and shopping malls. Their motto is the 3 Fs-Fete, Food and F…. Despite winning scholarships, doctorates and other professional qualifications, this group simply live life in a ‘don’t care a dam manner’. However much they may rise materially and intellectually, the base qualities linger on!
As for political consciousness, the jackasses only vote. They don’t understand the value of power and the need to make decisions. He is only too happy to surrender his life to the Leviathan so that he can have more time to spend in the bars and his wife and children can go to the malls!
