Key findings of the updated tracking poll being conducted by NACTA reveal that President Irfaan Ali continues to maintain a strong approval rating in his job performance with significant following and support from non PPP or non-traditional supporters. He is also very popular among all sections of the society as a down to earth populist leader who engages the public everywhere. He has taken governance to the people. The survey is being conducted by well known public commentator and analyst Dr Vishnu Bisram who has been conducting polls in Guyana since the 1980s.

The poll finds that approval rating exceeds two thirds percentage, maintaining an approval rating during his five years reign that reflects sustained public confidence in his leadership. Support is not only among traditional PPP supporters but also among all groups, including those who have been known to support the opposition, endorsing the government’s performance.

The strong ratings can be attributed to several initiatives that have provided economic stability as well as to key populist policy measures. There has been relief to all businesses and all segments of society through tax breaks, ensuring greater disposable income and subsidies to farmers. There was also cash grants, increased pension, child grants, etc, that almost everyone supports. The high level of confidence in the Irfaan government is also driven by infrastructural development, better access to education and health care (new hospitals), and other factors that have led to an improved quality of life.

The government’s education policies have also been a major factor in public approval. Initiatives such as promoting free access to education, the establishment of new education hubs, specialized courses in job training skills, the part time unemployment relief program, among other reasons have contributed to the positive perception of the government.

And in the area of foreign policy, through activism of External Affairs Minister Hugh Todd and lobbying work, the government has won the hearts of the nation in becoming a closer partner with USA, European and African nations, India, and members the OAS, especially as it relates to Venezuela’s claim over Guyana’s territory. The nation is very pleased with Guyana’s handling of Venezuela thanks to the work of Irfaan, the Vice President, the Attorney General and the border team, and Minister Todd.

Irfaan has staunch admirers and strong critics, but the majority continues to like him as he bears completion of five years in office.
