Sources say that Dr Asha Kissoon, the leader of The New Movement (TNM), was selected by representatives of the joinder list as its next Member of Parliament. If correct, she will replace Lenox Shuman as Parliamentarian who served from August 2018 to now.
Dr Kissoon, 33, studied medicine in Cuba, and currently serves as the doctor in charge of the Sophia Health Centre, entered politics for the March 2, 2020 elections and was the presidential candidate for TNM. The party together with A New and United Guyana (ANUG) and the Liberty and Justice Party (JLP) joined their lists to contest the elections for the allocation of seats. The three parties combined obtained just enough votes for one seat. The three parties agreed to share the five year term proportionally based on the percentage of votes each garnered in the joinder list. JLP has the first turn. Now TNM to be followed by ANUG. The exact time TNM will serve is not known but it is under one year.
Shuman was chosen as Deputy Speaker of the House. It is not known if Dr Kissoon will seek the position and obtain the support of the PPP. The position goes to a member of the opposition who commands a majority of the elected chamber.
