Passing the Point of No Return in Trinidad

Phillip Alexander

Martin Daly is one of the last remaining bright sparks of hope in this country who amazingly STILL seems to give a damn despite all he has seen, some up close. What keeps him writing still after having said it over and over for decades baffles me. To make an intelligent contribution in this country requires you to hit both sides in each contribution or risk being cast as a spokesperson for one or the other. The problem with effectively exposing the failure of both sides is their combined supporters ignore you, and then act surprised when all that you have been warning of for decades becomes a reality in their lives. Trinidad did not have to be this corrupt, this murderous, this failed. We have been warned forever, but our greed, fear or racism allowed us to excuse the reality that any decency within us should have rejected. Make no mistake, real violence is coming. Days of curfews and army boots are coming. Anarchy is coming.

The storm we have all been warning of is almost upon us. The government that is powerless to stop the preview will be even more useless for the main attraction. To tell you that there is a magic switch that could halt the momentum of need and anger certain to metastasize into our future would be to lie to you. There is a point when the pilot of large vehicles, seeing obstacles in their path, make no effort to try to evade what they know is inevitable. There is something called the point of no return. We are passed it. You can feel it. The joke of a Parliament refereeing the nonsense of red and yellow bacchanal is about to learn too late it’s importance to society.

As will the corrupted and beholding media that will sell advertising to the coverage of its own demise. ALL of it was wrong. ALL of it was failure. We watched and chuckled and picked sides and spoke of lesser evil nonsense while evil was consuming our last vestiges of a chance at being a real country. Even writing this now I ask myself why. Why bother? Inspired by the commitment of people like Margin Daly perhaps. The knowledge that there are among us people who could have helped us get it right even as we fought so hard to get it do wrong. I worry for the children soon to inherit the ashes. Days of darkness are coming. Batten down the hatches and hope for the best. We are way past the point of no return.
