Family members, friends, neighbors, supporters, block association members, politicians, police officers, firefighters, and clergy gathered Monday evening outside the Ozone Park home (96th Street and 133rd Ave) of Sarah Angel Rampersad for a collective prayer candlelight vigil, offering words of faith, hope, and solidarity during a difficult time. There was a public display of faith and solidarity. There was a collective prayer service as candles illuminated the street outside the family’s home. Organizers said the event was intended not only to provide comfort to Angel’s family but also to remind the community that they are not facing this ordeal alone.
Sergeant Rampersad was killed in Jordan by an attack from Iran almost two weeks ago. She will be interred on Friday July 31 after church service. Rampersad was born in Trinidad and migrated to USA with her mother and sister. She attended Forest Hills high school and John Jay College. She joined the USA army and was posted at different locations including in Germany and lastly in Jordan where was killed. She was promoted posthumously to Staff Sergeant as announced during the vigil on Monday night.
Police closed off traffic near the home. As the sun set, hundreds stood together in reflection, many holding candles while prayers were offered for Angel and her family. Religious leaders, politicians, community members spoke about the importance of remaining united and supporting the Rampersad family The press had a large presence from all the major media houses, electronic and written.
The ceremony included prayers, a moment of silence, cadets standing honor guard, and the release of white doves as the community remembered the 28-year-old Army sergeant and offered support to her family.
The vigil reflected the close-knit nature of the Ozone Park community. The gathering drew residents from across the neighborhood, not only Indians, Guyanese, and Trinis, demonstrating the strong sense of community that has formed around the family. There were mourners of all ethnicities and ages. Speakers shared messages of encouragement, and called on the public to continue keeping Angel and her loved ones in their thoughts and prayers and to support the family.
Several elected officials offered brief remarks honoring Sgt. Angel Sarah Rampersad and expressing support for her family.
Speakers emphasized hope and resilience. They thanked the family for the role and service provided by Rampersad. They also thanked volunteers, local organizations, and community members who have provided support since the search began.
Congressman Gregory Meeks praised Rampersad’s commitment to the nation, stating, “We all stand together for her bravery and for her loyalty and dedication. We will never forget her.” He also announced that a U.S. flag had been flown over the Capitol in her honor and of others killed in the Iran war that her name would be entered into the Congressional Record so her service would be permanently memorialized.
NYS Attorney General Letitia James emphasized the value of military service, saying, “Freedom is not free. It’s important we recognize her service to others.”
NYC Public Advocate Jumaane Williams addressed the family directly, saying, “I’m so sorry for your loss. I can only imagine your pain.” He presented a citation to the family.
Boro President Donovan Richards described Rampersad as “the American dream” and “a true American hero,” adding that her legacy would endure in Queens and beyond. He also noted her talents as a drummer, singer and athlete, and has proposed naming a street and possibly a school in her honor.
Congresswoman Grace Meng stated: “Our borough and nation are heartbroken over the loss of Sgt. Angel Rampersad. She bravely served our country with honor and made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedoms. We are forever grateful for her service, and she will never be forgotten”.
