A US diplomatic cable from Georgetown to the State department on June 27, 1974, says that David Granger, now President of Guyana, “had a history of being an “anti-East Indian racist”. At that time, Granger was serving as a major in the Guyana Defence Force that used terror against the Indian population to control them and was primarily responsible for denying Indians the right to vote in rigged elections. The army killed several Indian election workers in July 1973, the day of voting, and seized ballot boxes. The ballots were dumped and replaced by votes for Granger’s party, PNC.
The diplomatic cable was released by Wikileaks.
The PNC has dismissed the allegation of their party leader as an anti-Indian racist.
