The Indian Diaspora Council (IDC) International has sent a congratulatory message to newly elected PM of United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak. He is the first Asian, Indian, Hindu, non-White person to rise to the highest elective office in England. He is deserving of praise and will be a worthy PM.
The IDC message reads:
“The Indian Diaspora Council International (IDC) congratulates Hon. Rishi Sunak on becoming Prime Minister of the UK, the first person of colour and of the Indian Diaspora to attain this position.
In a letter to PM Sunak, IDC president Ashook Ramsaran conveyed to PM Sunak the tremendous sense of pride and jubilation among the Indian Diaspora and people everywhere who believe in diversity, opportunity and progress. IDC wishes PM Sunak much success in handling the enormous, unprecedented economic challenges facing the people of the UK.
PM Sunak is the first Hindu to become Prime Minister of the UK. “PM Sunak, 42, has always expressed pride in his Indian roots, and he regularly points to his upbringing as the son of immigrants. But he has not put his heritage at the center of his political message, focusing instead on his experience in finance, and the British news media has not dwelled on his ethnicity”.
“Britain is home to a vibrant and diverse community of people with roots in India, which it ruled as a colony for nearly a century before India won independence in 1947. As many as 1.5 million people of Indian descent live in England and Wales, making them the largest ethnic group after white Britons. That makes PM Sunak’s triumph a significant milestone for Britain’s Indian diaspora, whose long struggle against racism and prejudice is rarely a prominent issue in British politics”.
