Dear Editor,
There has been ongoing back and forth exchanges among various commentators on renegotiation of the Exxon contract and references to the oil giant and politics. The oil contract and Exxon are not factors in how the electorate vote based on views obtained from voters throughout Guyana.
The contract and Exxon will not induce people to vote for or against any party. The contract and Exxon may be factors in the politics of the political parties to have investors on their side but of virtually no effect on the voters. The parties are keen to maintaining good investor relations with Exxon to expand operations in Guyana. Thus, all sides are sensibly wooing the oil giant. That is good politics! But Exxon wisely has not gotten involved in the local politics and like all responsible foreign investors it is not likely now to take sides.
No government, regardless of party in office, would want to alienate Exxon or other oil investors or break signed contracts or take other measures that would adversely affect investment. It would be bad for business. Guyana needs continued investment to strengthen the path of rapid development. Thus, each party is playing its card silently and wisely on Exxon so to encourage oil production and lure investors.
Yours sincerely,
