Indian Arrival celebration in Guyana was held at the ground of the Palmyra Indian Monument in Berbice on the afternoon of May 5. The event was graced by Minister of Health Dr Vindya Persaud who is also head of Guyana Dharmic Sabha. Also in attendance was the High Commissioner of India to Guyana Dr KJ Srinivasa and his wife as well as staff of the mission. The Palmyra celebrations were one of several held around the country on that day. Celebrations were also held at Plantation Highbury in the morning. Highbury was where the first set of indentured laborers or girmityas landed in then British Guiana on May 5, 1838. Another ship with girmityas landed in Veeed en Hoop, West Coast Demerara on the same day. This year marks 185th anniversary.
