Ramadan or Ramzan, or Rojah, the month long fasting for pious Muslims, comes to an end this week. It is a special month for Muslims who fast from dawn to dusk breaking their fast after prayers with light snacks and beverage. This is followed by a special dinner or elaborate dishes called an Iftaar. In New York and USA, politicians host Iftaar dinner. In Guyana, President Irfaan held Iftaar dinner at state house. The President also in the past hosted Eid dinner. Eid cuminates the end of Ramadan.
Ramadan is not only a month of fasting. People pray with utmost devotion and meditation on the lord. It is a time when community get together to break the fast every evening with consuming of date or some other light snack. At the end of fasting this Saturday, family and friends get together for a celebration of long-held traditions. Vermicelli is shared and people donate money and other valuable materials to the less fortunate.
