The Indian Diaspora Council (IDC) participated in St. John’s University conference on May 6, 2025, organizing a session by prominent Indo-Caribbean speakers focusing on “SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC ADVANCEMENTS OF INDO-CARIBBEAN PEOPLE IN USA”.
The IDC session was one of several sessions at St. John’s University Center for Latin American Caribbean Studies (CLACS) 14th Annual Multidisciplinary Conference on Immigration/Migration held on May 6-May 7, 2025. The overall theme of this year’s conference is: IMAGING MIGRANTS: PROCESSES AND OUTCOMES. The event was held at the D’Angelo Center at St. John’s University campus in Queens, New York.

Dr. Sharla Khargi: Professor, CUNY, Community Advocate (Director of Clinical/Community Services, IDC): “MENTAL HEALTH IN THE CONTEXT OF THE CURRENT CLIMATE: IMMIGRATION AT OUR DOORSTEP”;
Dr. Nicole Bissessar, Professor of Economics ((Director of Community Cultural Affairs, IDC): “SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC ADVANCEMENTS OF INDO-CARIBBEAN PEOPLE IN THE USA”
Mr. Prakash Singh, Urban Planner (IDC Coordinator, Guyana): “INDO-CARIBBEANS IN AMERICA: ARE WE BEING COUNTED?”.
Dr. Vishnu Bisram, Educator, Political Scientist: “The ECONOMIC STATE OF BEING OF INDO-CARIBBEAN AMERICANS”.
IDC President Ashook Ramsaran moderated the IDC session.
The conference was organized and hosted by Professor Alina Camacho-Gingerich, Director, Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) Professor of Spanish and Latin American Studies, Department of Languages & Literatures. IDC has collaborated with CLACS on its annual conference focusing on Migration since the first conference on COPING IN AMERICA: The Case of Indo-Caribbeans in America.
Several Caribbean and Latin American consul generals in New York participated in the inaugural session. Other sessions by prominent academicians and experts focused on topics of interest and concern to various aspects of migration from Caribbean and Latin American countries and the impact on policies on their lives.
