Dear Editor,
In an interview conducted by BBC News following the recent US Presidential Election, Mr. Daniel Campo, a Venezuelan-American who voted for Donald Trump explained why he made that decision thusly:
“I understand what [migrants] are leaving. But you have to do it the right way. I came the right way… Things have to be done legally. Many of us were worried that the borders were just open [under the Biden-Harris administration].”
When two Latin-Americans, Mr. Alejandro Vanderhook and Mr. Uber Figeroa, both registered Democrats who voted for Joe Biden in 2020 were asked why they voted for Donald Trump in 2024 by CBS News, they criticized Texas Governor Greg Abbott for relocating migrants to New York, because they included gang members that were contributing to the crime in their current neighbourhood.
Probably the biggest shock to Democratic politicians in this election was the revelation of how many Latin-American voters were unsympathetic to the cause of illegal migrants and therefore voted for Donald Trump for the specific reason that he would plug the inflow that the Biden administration was failing to do. Because the fact of the matter is that when Mexicans, Venezuelans, Puerto Ricans, and Haitians flee from their country to escape the crime, poverty and other humanitarian crises that were plaguing them, they do not want to end up in the same situation, in the country that is supposed to be providing them safe sanctuary.
In the editorial of the Trinidad Express, the following sentence is stated as fact:
“The influx of Venezuelans may have worsened our crime situation, but that issue has much deeper, long-planted roots.”
And I wondered while reading this, is the editor of the Express asking hard-working, law-abiding citizens to accept this as a reality when the government is being paid hefty salaries to secure our borders and protect our citizens from all crime? Because here’s the thing, while the crime that sparked this recent conversation is still being investigated, and the perpetrators have not yet been positively identified, we must not turn a blind eye to the crime of illegal immigration that ought to still be enforced.
Because while the bleeding-heart social-justice brigade has sharpened their pitchforks to attack Mrs. Kamla Persad Bissessar for her statements, all that she is asking for is the protection of our citizens from criminals of any nationality. And the truth of the matter is that the Venezuelans who have claimed asylum in this country are hoping for the same level of security from those illegal immigrants as well. Because there are law-abiding Venezuelans who have entered this country legally, or who have sought legal asylum and are escaping the same level of crime and violence that is now following them here through illegal means.
As such, if we are to protect and have affection for our citizens as well as those who are in our care, then the illegal element must be rooted out and dealt with swiftly, in the interest of law and security for all.
