A three-day program was held on September 18 and 19 in the evenings and September 20 in the morning to commemorate the founding of the Maharshi Dayananda Gurukula in 2003 and to celebrate the birthday of its founder and Guru, Dr. Satish Prakash, a former New York City educator and distinguished Vedic scholar.

Dr. Prakash, popularly known as Guruji, earned his bachelor’s degree in foreign languages from the University of Guyana and subsequently received his doctorate in India. He taught in New York City for more than 25 years before giving up his teaching career to pursue his lifelong calling to promote Vedic knowledge, Hinduism, Indian culture, and the ideals of the Arya Samaj.

An accomplished scholar, author, musician, producer, and educator, Dr. Prakash has written numerous books on the Arya Samaj and has composed lyrics and produced and performed on several CDs. Among his most significant scholarly contributions is his translation and interpretation of the four Vedas in a form intended to make their profound teachings accessible to ordinary readers. He currently serves as Principal and Guru of the Institute of Vedic Studies in Guyana.

Dr. Prakash has devoted much of his life to education, spiritual development, and service to others. His commitment to the Arya Samaj and to the preservation and advancement of Vedic culture has taken him from New York to Guyana and to communities elsewhere. His life reflects an unusual degree of dedication to scholarship, teaching, service, and the spiritual development of others.

The three-day commemoration, held at the beautifully decorated Gurukula Mandir on 150th Street, Jamaica, brought together family members, former students, colleagues, community leaders, worshippers, acharyas, pandits, panditas, friends, and well-wishers. The program included discourses by Dr. Prakash, prayers, havan, tributes, speeches, singing, cultural presentations, and fellowship.

The discourses offered attendees a rich spiritual journey, connecting the wisdom of the ancient Vedic scriptures with the practical challenges of contemporary life. The Mandir was filled with an atmosphere of reverence, reflection, warmth, and joyful fellowship.

Young people played an important role throughout the programs. They participated in the chanting of Vedic mantras and the performance of havan, demonstrating discipline, enthusiasm, and a strong connection to Vedic traditions. Their participation reflected one of Dr. Prakash’s central missions throughout his life: to encourage young people to develop strong moral character, physical discipline, intellectual ability, and spiritual awareness.

The three sessions of spiritual discourse, or Katha, focused particularly on character building, discipline, righteousness, service, and the responsibilities of individuals toward their families and communities. Over the course of the celebration, the Mandir became a center of Vedic learning, vibrant chanting, personal reflection, and fellowship.

The occasion also marked Dr. Prakash’s 73rd birthday. The milestone provided an opportunity for the community to recognize not simply the passage of time, but more than seven decades of achievement and service. Speakers highlighted his contributions to education, culture, spirituality, Hinduism, the Arya Samaj, and community development.

His life’s work has touched many people in New York, Guyana, and elsewhere. Through his teaching, lectures, writings, translations, musical presentations, and personal guidance, he has helped generations of students and community members develop a deeper appreciation of Vedic teachings and their cultural heritage.

The programs also provided an opportunity for former students, colleagues, friends, acharyas, pandits, and panditas to share personal memories and tributes. Their remarks reflected the affection, admiration, and respect with which Dr. Prakash is regarded by those who have known him and worked alongside him over the years. Several individuals were also honored for their contributions to the Gurukula and Hinduism.

Well-known community leader and organizer Dr. Tara Singh, in brief remarks, reflected on Dr. Prakash’s lifetime of work in New York, Guyana, and elsewhere. He noted that through his lectures, discourses, scholarship, and personal interactions, Dr. Prakash has educated countless people about the teachings of Hindu scriptures and has made a significant contribution to the foundation and continued development of Hindu religious and cultural life.

The commemoration was more than an anniversary celebration. It was a heartfelt tribute to a life characterized by learning, service, dedication, faith, and commitment. Each session combined serious reflection with moments of laughter, humor, fellowship, prayers, and good wishes for Dr. Prakash’s continued health, happiness, and fulfillment.

At every session, Dr. Prakash expressed his gratitude and appreciation to all those who contributed to the establishment and development of the Gurukula and the Institute of Vedic Studies in Guyana, as well as to everyone who attended the anniversary and birthday celebrations. In keeping with his characteristic humility, he redirected the praise offered to him toward the eternal wisdom of the Vedas.

He urged the community to remain steadfast in its commitment to learning, righteousness, service, and mutual support. For Dr. Prakash, the celebration was therefore not merely a recognition of his own accomplishments, but a reminder of the greater purpose to which he has devoted his life: preserving, teaching, and sharing the timeless principles of Vedic knowledge for the benefit of present and future generations.
