Trinidadian born DEO GOSINE, residing in New York and Trinidad, was honored by the Indian Consulate in New York during the annual observance of India independence on August 15, 2026. Gosine is an engineer, businessman and community advocate whose activities have connected people and institutions in Trinidad and Tobago, the United States and India.

The award ceremony was held at the Consulate following the Indian Flag Raising ceremony marking the 80th observance of India’s independence. Gosine was among a few prominent individuals from the diaspora selected as outstanding high achievers and for their role in the diaspora and towards India. Gosine, and his Guyanese born wife, Tara Chandra have been regular visitors to India over the last three decades. They have been engaged in charitable and community work not only in India but in Trinidad New Yosa’s well. They also run and fund The Deo and Tara Gosine Foundation. The couple hosted a weeklong Yagya over the last few years in Trinidad and this year 14 nights. The couple attended several of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas conventions in India, in addition to Indian conferences at academic and cultural institutions in India, New York, and Trinidad.

According to the Deo Gosine Foundation, Gosine’s work has been guided by a commitment to social welfare, cultural harmony, education, community development and international cooperation, business growth, strengthening ties with India, particularly between Trinidad and Tobago and India.

Mr Gosine is known for cherishing his Indian heritage and values. He has advocated for continuing closer ties with India which is the source of his identity, history and culture. And he and Tara are committed to global cultural connections.

Gosine’s contribution is perhaps best understood not through a single achievement, but through decades of involvement in organizations and initiatives devoted to culture, business, conferences, education, economic empowerment, community development and the strengthening of relationships among people of Indian origin. With communities of Indian origin spread across continents, Gosine has sought to build bridges among them. Gosine’s roots in Trinidad and Tobago have remained central to his community activities. As the Indian population of Trinidad developed a distinctive identity—while retaining strong cultural, religious and historical connections with India—he became involved in efforts to bring the wider Indian diaspora together.
His work with the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) is particularly significant. Gosine has served as a life member and in leadership roles connected with GOPIO’s Business Council. He was also a major supporter and Grand Patron of GOPIO’s 2014 international convention in Trinidad and Tobago. That convention brought together representatives of Indian-origin communities from countries including India, the United States, Canada, Guyana, Suriname, the United Kingdom, Australia, Fiji, Mauritius, South Africa and other parts of the world. The gathering coincided with Trinidad and Tobago’s Indian Arrival Day commemorations and provided a forum for discussing the cultural, educational, social and economic concerns of the global Indian diaspora.

The award to Gosine was presented by Consul General, Amb. Binaya Pradhan. The citation cited Gosine as a high achieving entrepreneur, civic leader and philanthropist, representing outstanding achievements as a person of Indian origin, as well as Gosine’s continuing engagement with India at several levels. Also in attendance was Hon. Mary Tang Yew, Acting Consul General of Trinidad and Tobago in New York. Several community leaders were also present for the ceremony and to celebrate India’s 80th independence.

Gosine sponsored multiple academic conferences in Trinidad, New York and India, including one at BHU. In 2017, Gosine collaborated with the Indian Diaspora Council (IDC) in coordinating the installation of a plaque at Saith Park in Trinidad commemorating the centennial of the Abolition of Indian Indentureship. Previously in 2014, he coordinated GOPIO’s jubilee convention and installation of the Indian Arrival Monument at Waterloo-by-the-Sea in Trinidad. He was a founding member of GOPIO.

Since 1981, he has been a co-founder and life member of the Society of Indo-American Engineers and Architects, where he served as president from 1993 to 1995 and received the 2003 Engineer of the Year Service Award. His other community roles include serving on the Nav-Nirman Foundation Advisory Committee for drug rehabilitation and family counseling, and a 36-year membership with the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha of West Indies in New York, where he has been a trustee for 30 years and Co-Chair of the Building Committee.

After receiving the award, Gosine remarked: “I am extremely grateful to Amb. Pradhan and the Consulate of India for this honor. It is especially meaningful that is given to me on India’s Independence Day 2026. As the grandson of Mother India, I am proud of my roots and always cherish our bonds with India. That is, our rich heritage, enduring culture and traditions. It gives me enormous courage and strength that sustain me and my family for generations. Thank you and God bless India.”
