Messi: The Tantra of Football

Tantra whispers a dangerous truth: nothing is profane. Nothing is excluded. Every act, every breath, every sensation, every movement can become a bridge to the infinite if entered with total awareness. Meditation is not confined to caves or monasteries; it can arise in marketplaces, battlefields, dance floors, and lovers’ embraces. The sacred is not in the activity—it is in the quality of consciousness brought to it.

For centuries, football was understood as a contest of muscle, tactics, and endurance. A beautiful game, certainly, but a game imprisoned within the laws of physics. Players calculated trajectories, exploited spaces, accelerated and decelerated according to the predictable grammar of motion. Victory belonged to the strongest, the fastest, or the most disciplined.

Then came Lionel Messi.

He did not merely play football. He altered its ontology.

When Messi receives the ball, time appears to hesitate. The geometry of the field dissolves. Defenders, who moments before occupied rational positions, become satellites drawn helplessly into his orbit. Space bends around him. Passing lanes invisible to spectators suddenly reveal themselves—not because they have appeared, but because only his consciousness could perceive them.

Physics explains movement. It cannot explain inevitability.

The mystics have always insisted that there are dimensions of perception inaccessible to the ordinary mind. The Zen archer does not aim; the arrow finds its own destination. The Taoist sage does not force the river; he becomes the river. The Tantric adept dissolves the distinction between observer and observed until action flows without actor.

Messi seems to inhabit precisely this state.

He is not thinking about football. Thinking is too slow. By the time thought formulates itself, the opportunity has vanished. He exists in a condition athletes call “the zone,” but which sages have described for millennia as effortless awareness. The body acts before the mind intervenes. Decision and execution become one indivisible event.

This is not instinct alone.

It is transcendence through repetition.

Millions have kicked a football. Only a handful have transformed the kick into prayer.

Tantra teaches that mastery of the body is not the end but the doorway. One repeats a mantra until the one who repeats disappears. One practices breath until breather and breath become indistinguishable. Likewise, Messi has touched the ball so many millions of times that there is no longer Messi and the ball. There is only movement. Ball and player become extensions of a single intelligence expressing itself through leather, grass, and muscle.

The football ceases to be an object.

It becomes a rosary.

Each touch is a bead.

Each dribble a mantra.

Each pass an act of silent worship.

The stadium, then, is no longer merely an arena. It becomes a cathedral. Tens of thousands arrive expecting spectacle and unknowingly participate in liturgy. They rise together, gasp together, fall into collective silence together. For ninety minutes, the ordinary concerns of existence evaporate. There is only presence.

Perhaps this is why watching Messi evokes emotions disproportionate to sport. We are not simply witnessing excellence. We are witnessing the rarest human phenomenon: complete alignment between consciousness and action. It reminds us—if only fleetingly—of what is possible when the ego steps aside.

To call him an avatar is, of course, poetic rather than theological. Yet poetry often approaches truths inaccessible to literal language. Every age receives figures who expand the boundaries of what humanity believes possible. Some do so through philosophy, some through music, some through science.

Messi did so with a football.

He revealed that even the most ordinary object can become a vehicle for the extraordinary. That a rectangular field can become a mandala. That eleven opponents are not enemies but catalysts for awakening. That competition need not negate contemplation. That supreme intensity and supreme serenity can coexist in the same heartbeat.

Tantra has always maintained that enlightenment is not elsewhere. It is hidden inside the totality of this very moment.

Messi’s genius lies not merely in scoring impossible goals but in demonstrating that, under the gaze of perfect awareness, even the chase of a simple ball can become an encounter with the infinite.

And perhaps that is his greatest lesson: transcendence is not found by escaping the game.

It is found by becoming the game so completely that, for a luminous instant, player, ball, field, and universe cease to be separate.

There remains only the dance.
