On Saturday evening, New York based Federation of Hindu Mandirs in collaboration with USA Pandit’s Parishad Inc. solemnly organized a prayer vigil to honor and remember those who tragically lost their lives in and those who survived the MV Barima maritime disaster a week ago. Both organizations are compromised largely of Guyanese. The prayer vigil was held in Queens at the compound of the Shri Surya Narayan Mandir on 172nd Street, off Jamaica Ave. The shocking and tragic loss of lives has resonated across communities and deeply felt by the Guyanese diaspora. Hindu leaders and adherents of Hinduism gathered to pray and pay tribute to victims and the survivors. The gathering brought together Pandits, community leaders, faith representatives, families, youths, and well-wishers in a shared expression of grief, remembrance, and solidarity.
The vigil featured the lighting of ceremonial lamps, the chanting of Vedic prayers (Shanti Mantras), and moments of silence dedicated to the victims and their families. Attendees offered heartfelt prayers for the eternal peace of the departed souls and strength, healing, and comfort for those mourning this profound loss.
Speaking at the event, Dharmacharya Ram Hardowar of the Federation of Hindu Mandirs USA Inc. said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with every family affected by this heartbreaking tragedy. As a community rooted in compassion, service, and unity, we stand together in remembrance of the victims and pray for courage and resilience for their loved ones during this difficult time.”
Surya Mandir executive Pt Vishal Hardowar, Dr Tara Singh of NYGM, District Leader Richard David, and lawyer Rusat Ramgopal delivered remarks. They all stressed support for the families of the affected and the survivors. May the memories of the victims and the families and survivors be comforted by prayers.
Spokespersons of the Federation and Pandits Parishad and other speakers emphasized the importance of community support during times of tragedy and encouraged individuals and organizations to extend assistance to affected families wherever possible. Pandit Ram reiterated the two Hindu organizations’ and the community’s condolences as families of victims and the nation at large continue to grieve and struggle with the pain and sorrow of the loss of so many lives as well as those injured.
The program also featured remarks on the death of Sarah Angel Rampersad of Ozone Park, Queens, who was killed in the Iran war a week ago. Pt Ram prayed for peace and safety of American soldiers.
The public joined the vigil, highlighting the universal values of compassion, hope, care, and unity in the face of loss. Their participation reflected the spirit of interfaith solidarity and collective mourning.
