Dear Editor,
I support the group of Guyanese from Guyana and the diaspora who have launched a political movement called ‘GoAMERICA’, advocating for a linkage with USA. I commend the initiators of this idea of a linkage with USA as a proposed solution to problems faced by Guyana. It is one of the boldest and most innovative proposals ever presented to the population and the diaspora as a solution to Guyana’s many social and territorial problems.
It is an understatement to say that after ten years of self-government and nearly sixty years of independence, no government has been able to unite the nation of six different peoples. The country is as divided or more divided today than it was in 1953 following the dissolution of the first national government.
There is overwhelming support for a formal or informal linkage with USA as a proposed solution to the above problem. Almost every Guyanese I spoke with, except for a few closely tied with the two leading political parties and some big business people depending on state contracts, like the concept. They feel Guyanese will benefit with American assistance for internal security (including crime and racial violence), protection against Venezuela, sustainable national development, equality and justice, first world health care, education, and infrastructure, an end to Chinese dominance in Guyana and second class status of Guyanese, an overall brighter future. Guyanese complain about corruption and the collapsing new roads except for the one just built by Indian engineers, among other aspects of governance.
As Guyanese informed me, Guyana government is broken and the country is fast becoming a failed state. The state is under threat from drug traffickers and criminals. Nothing is done efficiently! Most politicians are corrupt, hustling for themselves. Corruption is everywhere. There is a hustle for contract or to engage in fraud to get rich quickly without hard work. Politicians own many companies getting state contracts. There is very little honesty in government. Good governance is not in the vocabulary of politicians. Yet people are beholden to politicians because of racial and party loyalty and not what is in their or the country’s best interests. Guyanese must step beyond race and party lines if they want to see real progress, development, and a better life, and to end racism. The promoters recognize that the population and the electorate are very racially fractured and that half of the population live in poverty; half of the population is also out of government. People feel that the solution to the country’s endemic problems is Guyana becoming a part of USA. They say Guyanese must embrace USA to live a better life similar to that as their family and friends in America.
The current American President, Donald Trump, is promoting the idea of an American tie up with or incorporation of several countries. The promoters of the idea have written to President Trump to consider a tie up with Guyana. They have also approached Members of Congress and politicians around the country from all political parties for their views. A meeting is sought with the President to further discuss the concept.
If Guyana becomes an American territory, every Guyanese will be entitled to the coveted blue American Passport and with all the privileges that come with being an American. All Guyanese living in USA and with American citizenship will automatically become citizens and get the blue passport. It is an idea in which everyone wins. Guyanese gains and the Americas will have access to develop Guyanese resources with fair returns. It is the only viable solution to protect Guyana from some very deceptive rapacious politicians of all ethnicities, from the plan of Venezuela to take over Guyanese territory and its many resources, and from Chinese draining of Guyana’s resources to develop China at the expense of Guyana.
