The Indian Diaspora Council International (IDC) and its global affiliates expresses its profound sorrow and heartfelt condolences to the families, loved ones, and communities affected by the tragic sinking of the passenger ferry MV Barima off the Atlantic coast of Guyana on Saturday, July 18, 2026. This devastating disaster claimed the lives of more than 60 people, including many young children, and has plunged the nation into a period of deep grief and mourning.
IDC joins with the Government and people of Guyana, as well as Guyanese communities around the world, in honoring the memory of those who lost their lives in this horrific tragedy. We extend our deepest sympathies to all those who are suffering the pain of losing family members, friends, and loved ones. Our thoughts and prayers are also with the survivors, many of whom have endured unimaginable trauma, physical injuries, and emotional distress as a result of this catastrophic event.
Among the most heartbreaking stories to emerge from this tragedy is that of a mother who survived the disaster but lost seven of her children who were traveling with her. Such accounts underscore the immense human suffering and emotional devastation caused by this incident. No words can adequately describe the anguish experienced by the families whose lives have been forever changed by this loss.
The MV Barima, a vessel built in 1939, was on its regular route from Georgetown to Port Kaituma in Guyana’s North West District when it suddenly capsized and sank. At the time of the disaster, the ferry was carrying 116 passengers and a crew of 17. In the immediate aftermath of the sinking, Guyana’s emergency response agencies mobilized extensive rescue and recovery operations. Aircraft, marine vessels, medical personnel, and other emergency teams responded swiftly and courageously, saving many lives while continuing the difficult search for those who were missing or feared drowned.
IDC commends the dedication and professionalism of the rescue personnel, first responders, healthcare workers, volunteers, and ordinary citizens who assisted during the emergency. Their tireless efforts, often undertaken in challenging conditions, provided hope and assistance to survivors and grieving family members during one of the country’s darkest moments. During this time of sorrow, IDC calls upon the international community, humanitarian organizations, faith-based groups, and members of the global Guyanese diaspora to offer support and assistance to the families affected by this tragedy. May the memories of those who perished be a lasting source of inspiration and strength for their loved ones, and may the survivors find comfort, healing, and hope in the difficult days ahead. May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace, and may their families be granted strength, courage, and consolation as they navigate this immense loss.
